Do I really need a H or X pipe?

Or can I just run 2 straight pipes to my Magnaflow muflers?

advantages/disadvantages.

I am not a hp freak.

No, you don't have to, but it's a cheap and easy way to add hp. I like the way the X-pipe changes the exhaust sound.

I personally like the sound of an x-pipe, but running two completely seperate pipes would work too i guess.

Dodgenut64 03-22-2007 07:17 PM

What kind of sound does an X pipe make?

chicane 03-22-2007 10:06 PM

Its kinda hard to balance scavenging without one or the other...

An X will quiet down the more aggressive (aka loud) systems. It can add a little more power and its not as frequency sensative as an H pipe.

An H is a mere balance tube but doesnt do as much for scavenging, negative pressure balance, frequency control or sound quality.

Yep, I really see no "upside" to not running an x-pipe. To be honest I thought the only people the used H-pipes were the ones too lazy or unable to fab up an x-pipe.. lol

Magnaflow makes a nice 3" x-pipe.. It's what I'm running.

Location ?

Does the location of the X-pipe have an effect and/or is there a best position for one ? On my project (C5 vette sys) I can place it close to the engine right at the clutch - or just in front of the rear axle before it goes up and over.

Thx, Jim

Jim,
Everything I've ever read (not talking about Car Craft or whatever here) says to put it close to the engine.

Garage Dog 65 03-29-2007 10:55 AM

Excellent. Thanks Matt !

Yes they are typically mounted immediately downstream of the headers. Here is the system in my Mustang.
