Muffler suggestions?
I'm trying to figure out what to do for mufflers on the car. I'll be running 3" with an X-pipe. Lets hear some suggestions (no pun intended, lol). :D

I heard a set of spin tech's a year or so ago and nothing has sounded better IMHO.

Hey Scott, I have 2 1/2" Spintech's Sportsman series mufflers with the X pipe on my camaro and have had a LOT of positive comments with the sound. Hardly ANY interior resonance what so ever... I love 'em IMO!!!
I'll probably upgrade to the 3" when I get the motor back in and the rest of car done... |
With my limited knowledge of mufflers a Spintech or Flowmaster type muffler would be too restrictive (backpressure) with your turbo system and that you would want a straight through design. Chambered like Prodigy would be cool or something from Borla.

I would think it would depend on what engine you have. For LSx engine, I also prefer Ultra Flows, I have them on my car and they sound great. Not loud or rumbly at idle but all that changes once you step on it.

Keep in mind that what sounds good on a old-school small-block won't sound the same on an LSx engine.
I've had good luck with Magnaflows, However a set of Spintechs would be a deal to try out. Do you want it to be as loud and angry as possible or more refined? |
Steve, that's what I was thinking - the LS would change the sound a bit. I've done the Flowmasters, but I want to do something different. Spintech's are at the top of the list... with that said, I'd like a more late model sound. Something like the way Sandlin's Procharged ZO6 sounded at SEMA. :D

Anything straight through and packed is the way to go IMO... they will have the least resonance, be quietest during light-load, and the best flow.
Borla XR1 (great mufflers in all aspects... unfortunately they are limited for inlet/outlet configurations and they don't make a config to fit my car which is the only reason I'm not running them.) Magnaflow Dynomax Ultraflo Spintechs sound pretty nasty and turn heads-- a couple of my friends run them only for the sound. However, several guys on another message board making big power have made more power switching from Spintechs to straight through packed style mufflers. I used to run Ultraflo's but they cracked on me and I switched to Magnaflow. I really like them both for sound and quality-- and their case profile being devoid of flat surfaces will be more resistant to bloating/cracking as my Ultraflo's did. |
My brother as dynomax ultra flows on his procharged 357 small block. They sound great. When cruisin they are very quite so you can hear the radio :cool:. But when he's at full WOT it sounds like a jet airplane is going by you :lol:

I love my ss magnaflows. I get a lot of complements. Strait threw design.

How about Stainless Works, nice quality stuff, sounds good. I believe he has two different mufflers to choose from. Just keep in mind killer loud can get pretty monotonous on the long haul, if you plan on extended cruising.

Muff
Went from Flowmaster to Spintech and lowered interiour noise quite a bit. Also Spintech came in every configuration and were thinner than the Flowmaster. Had a good price too. Talked directly to Spintech.

LS7, Cam, Headers, 3", X pipe, any of these choices will sound great. Cool car.

Scott, the final decision is up to you. I have heard a set of Borla's on a '06 'Vette with an LS2 and they made a very nice low rumble at idle. Start up was a sharp sound as well though. Rev's were smooth and strong. When the guy left the shop he got on the freeway we were next to. The ramp is visible from the shop, and he floored it getting on the freeway. It sounded very refined and strong. More like a Ferrari than a 'Vette. I loved that sound and would love to replicate it somehow. On our cars it would sound different based on the location of the exhaust exit. Possibly quieter with full tail pipes.

I always use Borla XR-1 on our projects... but then again most of them have been old skool big blocks and I run a min of 3-3.5" tubes. Anything with decent compression or cubes would benifit from the XR-1's. I run them on our 9 second camaro thats powered by a 427 sbc and it actually runs quicker with the mufflers than without them.
The mustang project is getting a set of flowmasters only because I love the sound of them on a 5.0. All the young punks have them on their mustangs and it sounds great. But I'd really like to know what an XR-1 would sound like an an LS-x. |

Here is a sound clip of my LS2 with Hooker long tubes, back, x pipe, and 3" stainless all the way back with Dynomax Ultra Flows.
Quiet and almost subdued at idle, but get your attention when you get on it. There is a Speed World Challenge C5 Corvette that races with our club, this exhaust system sounds a lot like it. We use spintech pro street mufflers on everything. amrys 57 with the ls6 has them on it.........it SOUNDS..very nice.:yes:

I have some Rhino Performer RPM mufflers straight thru packed I had on a Nova for about 20 mins one time quiet and then louder when WOT, but I don't think they make them any more,

I am having installed 3" with X pipe and edelbrock 304 SS, anyone heard this combo in a big block, should be back from the shop this week, cant wait to here it.

I don't remember where I read it, but I read something on a forum about a 1/4 wave tuned side branch resonator that will all but eliminate the resonance performance mufflers can generate. I think I saw this on a Mustang site, but I can't find it at the moment.
Anyway, you branch out on a "T" (90* to the pipe), using the same size pipe, capped on the end. You make this branch 1/2 the length of the tail pipe. It seams that the resonance we hear actually comes from the tail pipe, not the muffler. Accordning to the stuff I printed out, "As the acoustic wave from the sourse reaches the branch, the energy splits equally. The wave travelling down the side branch reflects off the closed end and is reflected back down toward the branch. When it arrives back at the branch it is excactly 180 degrees out of phase from the source wave because the branch has a length of 1/4.
