So, how was your day?
Most likely better than mine.. lol
Remember the "Penny Lives" thread? Well in the words of Borat "Not so much..." http://picsorban.com/upload/broked.jpg We should have the whole engine out today.. rebuilt tomorrow and back in completely Wednesday. Fun huh? The new quote for the day "The first 98% of building a car is easy, it's the last 2% that will make you cry" We had low oil pressure (8 psi) at idle. Dropped in two quarts and it went up to 25 psi at idle. We though it was the oil pump o-ring, maybe the pick-up tube. So far the o-ring is perfect. We pulled the cam to have a look and noticed the journals (that ride in the cam bearings) had grooves on one side and not on the other. Considering the cam is new it shouldn't of had any grooves. Thinking there might of been a heat treating issue, not sure until we tear it down and send the part to the experts. The cam was a custom grind and even with COMP working miracles in customer service it would take three days to grind a new one. By the way, the CS at COMP has been top notch. I really couldn't ask for more. Old cam specs: 230/232 .591/.595 114+2 New cam specs: 232/234 .595/.598 112 Will be a little more lopey. I don't think the power curve will change much. COMP has this in stock and is going to next day air it to me. We will tear down the block, check everying and toss in new bearings where needed. we will then tripple check the pickup tube and reasemble the engine. Will hopefully fire it up Wednesday late.. hopefully.. lol The cam scoring could have caused the oil pressue issue although it wasn't that "loose". Will know more tomorrow when we have her torn down completely. Penny will live, just not today.. |
bummer sounds like you willl be burning some midnite oil
|
damn
steven
that sucks,,,,,sorry to hear about that... sounds like youll have her running in no time... will we have a video clip???? check your email please radrambler |
Damn I know your pain........Lucky if my car is on the road by the end of june!lol
(sorry this is off topic but could you tell my the sizes the holes are on your master cylinder is the front 1/2 and the back 9/16? thanks):) |
A bigger cam? That's the only change? I'm shocked.:faint:
|
so how far did it go before yanking the motor? the prostreet 57 went 28 miles before breaking a distributor gear:faint: gotta love workin out the bugs:thumbsup:

The bitch of it is that I just sold an ARP main stud kit and rod bolt kit. I didn't use them because I didn't want to tear down a new motor. Jokes on me I guess.. Oh well, that's hot rodding for ya. Sometimes you're the hero and sometimes you're the goat. |

well, both those items aren't bolt-ins, they require machine work. So you saved yourself some money and time!:D |
That sucks Steve. Time to get drunk. :unibrow:

Owe ya a phone call.. been overly preocupied.. |

No biggie.. It's only time and money.. right? Ok, now I need another beer.. |
Oh man that's rough... will make it that much sweeter when she's on the road!!
 |
Just like in the build, it's always the little crap that gets you.
Does remind me of a dumb mistake I made years ago, kind of off topic, but I thought it might make you laugh. Ever shim an oil pump with a welch plug? Know what happens when you do? Oil pressure is fine at idle, but as soon as you give it some gas, the bypass opens, lets the oil in, but it won't bleed out and locks the bypass closed. Did you know you can actually blow an oil filter right off of a 409 with this little trick? :wow: 'Bout peed my pants when it exploded the filter off of it's mount. Took me a few to figure out what I had done wrong! Shiny Side Up! Bill '72 442 "Inamorata" '89 ASC/McLaren www.FQuick.com/ProTouring442 |
A treatment problem with a Comp cam? Look around over at Team Chevelle, doesn't appear to be that uncommon.
|
Steve, what can I say..
Keep you head up little buck-a-roo? I don't think that would help. That really sucks! Now I am all freaked out about starting mine. Running a comp grind as well.
I will be thinking about you and having a beer...just on the other coast When things settle down give me a buzz. |
I was going to ask if you used a double roller timing chain on your engine. Reason I ask is because some of the sets have oil pump shims with them. Similar to what ProTouring442 had mentioned the driverside shim can be flipped upside down and still bolt on. It will cut off 2/3's of the oil passage to the upper engine. Something to look into if you did have shims. Dont ask how I know. :faint:
|
wasn't this motor dynoed, why was the low oil pressure not caught then?? would of eliminated all of this and is exactly what dyno testing is for
killer car, killer motor goodluck |

Also, there's no evidence the low oil pressue is related to the cam issue. I feel the low oil pressue is a problem with the pick-up tube (crack or such). Will know for sure today. Like I said, just part of the "car building experience".. what can ya do? |
well that sucks.. Good luck Steve.

Keep you head up Steve. On a good note your hood pin - skuff plates are going to be shipped or maybe even hand delivered to you if you like. |

Hey, have you seen the new June issue of PHR yet??? |
Well, crap. That's just not cool, sorry to hear it's more than something simple. This car has really had a man streak in her at times, it'll get sorted out though. You'll look back and laugh in a few years, for now just keep muscling it.

Tough luck steve, at least you'll get a bigger cam and possibly a rebuild with ARP hardware making the motor even stronger. Please post up what happened when you find out. :(

I went ahead and upgraded my clutch, the Lambo on Bullrun got me thinking ;) |
What did you do for a clutch?
I am running a textralia with a billet flywheel. I hear the Mcleods are real good as well.

A moment of silence for the fallen crank.. she led a short, but.. well a short life.
If I went 30 under it MIGHT be ok.. 30.. :willy: Still no idea what killed it. The heads and valvetrain are perfect, pistons look like new. |

In positive news I found a local crank from another LS2 (pull-out) for $500.. Could be worse I guess. If it was easy everyone would do it.. lol |

Those look just fine.... For a motor run with no oil. Good god man!!! Is there any way to make sure the oil galley isn't blocked in any way to make sure that doesn't happen again?
|
Turbos.....:_paranoid
|
Needs two turbos
|
Sorry to hear your troubles Steve.
