A part that SOMEBODY needs to make...
1 Attachment(s)
I was driving my Camaro, shortly before it was sent back to the bodyshop, and noticed a glaring area where it needed improvement.
The cowl hood. 90% of us don't run the factory cowl vents on the hood since we aren't running the cowl-induction air cleaner. This means we are stuck with an undinished area of the hood that we have to stare at when driving down the road. Somebody needs to make a part to close off this area, some sort of wire mesh with a frame that will bolt to the factory locations. It would really do a lot to clean up this area and give a finished look. Thoughts? A laser cut piece of stainless? A more elaborate solution? Who will solve this common first gen problem. I know I would buy one :) |
A buddy of mine fabricated his own mesh screen on his 'glass 2x4 hood and it looks great...gives it that '60's "competition" look.
I still run the factory cowl flapper so mine's intact...but I do know what you mean. That is the first thing you see as soon as you're behind the wheel. |
Check out the hood going on the "red witch"...:D
https://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=7736 It's a carbon copy of what your looking for, we should have them for sale in about a month or so. Stenod |

Still, somebody needs to make/sell this part. I would imagine many guys with regular cowl hoods would spring for them You shipping my hood next week??? :unibrow: |

Heh, get in line, Buddy. :D |
Hey Steve, that's on our list with my buddy to do. He is doing a water jet ti item for this that will be plated. I don't know what color yet, but he has a pattern already picked out. I will not have it before Pleasanton though.

Have a picture? Seem redundant for everyone to design thier own. Someone need to curn out a hundred or so, mark them up a notch, and sell them. |

On Dad's '68, we cut out a sheet of aluminum to close off the cowl hood. Without it sealed, the hot under-hood air comes out there and goes right into the cowl vents and into the interior when the blower fan is on... really sucks if you don't have A/C.

The CF Hoods are awesome.
Please keep me posted on when these go up for sale. Thanks, Ty O'Neal |

To All: Regarding the CF Hoods: Do they need/ have any structure on the underside of them like the metal ones, or are they good to go without it? Does anyone know if the gel coat could be tinted when they are made. It would look really cool to see a Red Hood that showed the CF underneath. Maybe just a Tint if nothing else. Thanks, Ty |

I'm sure the gel could be tinted. You could also just shoot the hood in a tinted or candied clear. |

I've been meaning to make one for my car for years... every time I drive it I think " hey I still need to make some sort of mesh cover for that vent"
I would buy one if someone made them.... |

Steve,
Make me a pattern of what you need and i'll have a few hundred made no problem. |
I for sure would be in for one. I hate the look of the back of my hood now.
|
LOL, I've never noticed this loose end...but then again, I've never driven my car yet either! I'm interested!! :)

Firewheel Classics in Wyle,Texas has been selling grills for the back of the cowl opening that screw in at factory spots for a couple yrs. now. There not very expensive, waterjet cut,but not billet alum.Works good for me.

With low pressure at the base of the window, I would think that the evacuation of hot air from under the hood might even be a better use for it rather than using it to pull air to the engine. There are plenty of ways of piping outside/cooler air to the engine.
Also, at speed relieving air from under the hood would help keep the car low to the ground. Is this wrong??:_paranoid Ty |
The base of the windshield is a high pressure area. However, to determine the flow of air you'd have to check and compare the mean underhood pressure vs pressure at the base of the windshield/cowl inlet; the air will flow across the pressure gradient from high to low. You'd have to get some pressure transducers or rig up a quick manometer setup to check the pressures. Or, go budget-style and simply tape a piece of streamer tape or paper to the back of the cowl hood and go for a drive and note if it sucks into the hood or flaps outwards.
With the cowl hood not sealed to a carb pan (as in the original installation) I don't know what the direction of flow will be-- someone do an experiment and find out, I want to know. I'm cowl-less or I would do it myself. |

I found it here: http://www.firewheelclassics.com/PDF...%20Catalog.pdf page 115 . Btw really good pics on their catalog too. |

The heat coming out of it, and into the interior is much more noticeable at low-speeds... the engine fan is pulling air in, and the hot air (which rises) escapes through the unsealed cowl hood. Sealing off the carb would solve the problem, but Dad is cheap, and doesn't care much about performance, so we just covered the opening so it would be more comfortable to drive. |
Cowl Hood Filler

Here is a filler piece that Scott at Chubby's Welding made for his 68 and my under construction 67. A really nice piece and he also makes a piece similar to it as a hold down on his tricked out 68. He is a very good fabrication guy. He is a Lateral-G member by the name of coolwelder62. Give him a call at his shop 785-594-7481
Scott is also the guy who performed ALL the fabrication work on Mizfits 69 Camaro that is now for sale at $185,000 unfinished. Have a good one, Rusty |

Here's the one from Firewheel Classics.. Hard to beat for $22 and it can be painted any color you wish. Nice people too. http://picsorban.com/upload/plate.jpg |
Personally I would like to have it done in mesh with a small frame. Don't the glass hoods have it in mesh...I thought I remembered seeing that? Perhaps your old hood Steve?
