anyone driven a spec Miata?

So I was sitting around having a few beers the other day with some of my track buddies and they were giving me **** about me kicking their ass at the track. They said the only reason I was doing that is my ZO6 had too much hp.. This is coming from guys driving ZO6s, gT3s, GT3RS, ect.. So I decided that we all get the same car. We decided that we will buy 6 Miatas, set them up the same way, turbocharge them ect..

we shall see..

Btw, this is my new track car..
A friend of mine was buying a new boat and wanted to sell his new Z. So I got to thinking, might be a good time to upgrade to a new track car. My '01Z has about 3500 track miles on it and is a great car but what the hell.. I picked it up a few weeks ago. I ordered full suspension, Brembos 6 piston front, 4 rear, aluminum radiator, solid bushings, seats, harness bar, belts ect. I sent it to my tuner to get the same cam as my blk car, light clutch ect. 551/494 at the wheels. It will have it's first event this weekend..

I think Mark Stielow did some of that recently. Did very well as I remember, and had a ball. Definitely separates the drivers as the cars are so equal, plus the regular series doesn't have a ton of power, so smoothness is rewarded.

I have two spec miatas, both for sale! and a toter home with trailer.

We bought one of our miatas the first year it came out and let my sister drive it for about 2 years then we turned it into a SSB then a few years later it went to a SSC car and now its a SM.

We have had lots of fun with them and they are great cars and are so easy to drive. they never brake and are just plain strong little cars.

A few years back I was contracted to do some development work (suspension and drivetrain) for Tri-Point Enginnering / MazdaComp... and was lucky enough to get some good seat time during development of TPE's multi/consecutive year championship winner (Jeff Altenburg). It was actually kind of unfair... we had all of the former Mazda IMSA crew working the project (engine and electronics). Well... maybe that... and our "open" budget.

The hands down top of the list items are: Penske's, a "tuned" MazdaComp limited slip diff and some transmission tweaks. Those alone are going to be the majority of 'reliability' items. The differential carrier (posi) is about as big as your fist... so remember that when you start throwing squirrels at it.

That little car is pretty bad ass when you get it set-up correctly. :unibrow:

There are a bunch of cheap and stupid simple tricks to give it an edge. But, since you are all going to set them up the same... I guess it wouldnt be fair to just tell you. ;)

You have way too much money SK
Hey chicane, I have run those cars at Thunderhill before with all the Tri-Point suspension systems in there. I can vouch for these setups. I used to drive to Tri-Point from Santa Barbara to pick up parts all the time for my 7 back in the day.

Those Miatas look like fun lil road rockets. I'm sure yours will be black. Can't wait to see the resulting buildup.

I have been racing Spec Miata for the past four years. They definitely reward smooth driving and teach you to carry momentum. As mentioned in an earlier post, they are very reliable.

Here's an even better idea, SW. And yes, I work for GM so I'm sure you know where this is going.

Why don't you and your friends all buy 6 Saturn Sky Redlines? They're already turbo charged and are a better built car
and 10 times better looking. The chassis on Sky/Solstice takes it's cue from the Corvette's suspension with all hydroformed framing.
If you were to put the two chasiss's side by side, the Kappa architecture looks like a miniature version of the Corvette's. It's pretty amazing. You can't get any better than that. And all your money goes to an American product...instead of Japan. Kill two birds with one stone.

I've driven the Sky Redline and it's a great little car that handles like it's on rails. Something to think about.

OK, sales pitch is over. :)

Yeah, saw that. That thing is nuts. PM/BL are doing some great things! SP is really cookin', too. Hope to have their 4L80E in my Supra by fall. ;)
