TH200-4R shift points
 

i all,
last week i install a brandnew 200-R4 from Bowtieoverdrives behind my El-Camino. Stage II. the tranny works fine and and good.
but now i have a question. the shiftpoints on this tranny are to low for my engine. the 200-4R shifts between 3800 and 4000 rpm in the next gear.
and i missing the TCI punch. my old TH350 from TCI shifts harder and i like and missing that. what can i do ?:question:

If the TV cable is at full extension at WOT (and it should be, but check) and it is still shifting at 4K then you'll need to change the governor to put your WOT shift RPM where you want it-- specifically, you need to remove weight from the governor.

If the shift points at part throttle are too low for your tastes you need to modify the TV cable geometry so it's extended more at the part throttle levels but still maintains the just contacting at idle / full extension at WOT relationship.

It's not uncommon... my old BTO tranny shifted at only 4200 rpm at WOT even though Steve swore up and down at shifted at 5500 in their test car. He ended up sending me 2 governors to correct the low WOT RPM shift issue and also a valve body to correct a really sloppy 2-3 shift but I never had a good 2-3 shift even with the new valve body. I ended up blowing it up, but the 2-3 shift issue is a 700R4 thing because of some valve body limitations.

Here's some really good pix of the governor spring/counterweight contraption for the 2004R, so you know what you are lookng at. Best approach is to get the highest rpm spring weight combination and then employ a rev limiter on the engine just in case. I'm not really up on the pre-electronic stuff, but I believe the Grand National governor is the hot ticket.

ok, the governor eliminate the low shift points. but, what can i do for harder shifts ? helps a shift kit like this ?

A Grand National governor will shift about 5000-5100 RPM. The 3.8 buick was never a high-winder.

As far as harder shifts, I haven't dinked with many 2004R's but a shift kit and larger boost valves should bump the line pressure and produce a harder shift. A 2004R can shift hard, the one in my '89 Turbo Trans Am was nasty at wide open throttle.

Make absolutely sure you are getting full TV cable extension at WOT before doing anything silly, if you aren't then the transmission will never think you have the throttle on the floor.
