Automatic Transmission for Twin Turbo SBC

This has probably been asked before, but I'm looking for some options for an automatic (with overdrive) tranny for a 600-650 fwhp twin turbo set up. I keep hearing of the 4L80E but have no clue what this is. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something I can put in drive and cruise (with an occasional leaning on the throttle!). Any suggestions?

I'm running a 4L80E behind my twin turbo LS2. It's basically a TH400 with electronic controls and overdrive. The recommendation is good because it can handle that power easily, has overdrive, and full electronic controls which mean you can set all the shifting speeds and pressures.

If you don't need overdrive then a TH400 would be the cheapest way to go.

What's a ballpark figure on a transmission and converter?

I paid $2500 shipped to my door for a trans capable of 900-1000 HP or more, and a good converter.

2500-3000 and that would be a Hughes 4l80e with twist machine tq convertor, but that is without the core charge of 1000 until you send back a junk 4l80e, a junk yard 4l80e can be had for 150-500

The search is on! What mods are necessary for installation in a 1st gen Camaro? Specifically the trans tunnel. Also what crossmember will I need. Thanks for all the help.

They clear the stock tunnel, but are tight. Some people have to massage the area where the cooler lines exit the trans, but they cleared on mine.

I have not found a bolt-in crossmember yet, but it was a couple years ago that I set up mine. I do know at the time the BTO had one that they claimed fit, but it was not even close, off by 8" or so. I made my own crossmember from a universal kit bought from Chassisworks.

You also have to have a controller to run the trans, so allow for that in the budget (about $500-$600).

Have you heard of the "4STB" overdrive trans from FB Performance? I was looking to use a 4L80 but then saw this "4STB" online. The prices are similar but I've heard the 4STB is a bit lighter and the "OD" is operated via solenoid. Either one will require a new crossmember, driveshaft, ect.

I'm still looking for some input/info from anybody who has actually used the 4STB. FB Performance claims it can handle 1000 HP but I'd like to hear that from someone other than it's manufacturer!

as was said before that tranny is not electronic, so no real shift tuning
