Narrow a Stock Fuel Tank? Possible?
 

Hey guys, is it possible to narrow a repro fuel tank? I'm try to avoid spending $700 for one of Rick's tanks if at all possible... I'd like to have a stock style tank (unused) narrowed 4" to fit between a DSE minitub kit...

I doubt any commercial place would do it for you. I had a sump and an internal fuel pump installed in a stock tank here in SoCal, and the one thing they wouldn't even think about was cutting the flange between the top and bottom of the tank.

it would have to be narrowed in 2 places to keep the fill tube centered, i doubt it would be cost effective, but it shouldnt be any problem... heck id do it if my tig-welds looked nice enough to charge money for...

yes it is possible, like what was said above, by the time you pay a shop to do it, you could buy a narrower tank, but if you can mig weld i say go for it.

You mean something like this... :) I (we) did the exact same thing you are asking about. We removed 4"/side to fit between the mini-tub. The only negative is that it took the tank's capacity from 18 gallon to ~10. Getting only 8-10 mpg it SUCKS for long cruising. I've driven it this way for more than 4 years and have had NO issues.

I am currently having a friend that is a fabricator make me up a stainless tank that is approx 4" deeper but the same width for additional capacity. As well we are putting the baffles in and installing the A1000 pump in the tank.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the info. If the DSE minitub kit moves the leafs inward 1.5", then a 2" narrowing on each side would seam to be enough... Any idea if any companies out there make narrowed or custom tanks that aren't stainless, and less expensive than Ricks, etc?

I wish I could rememebr who's pics these are to give proper credit. Anyway, you may be able to get away with just a notch, as the front of the springs do not move with the offset shackles. If you're not capable of doing the welding, perhaps a radiator shop would tackle the job-likely only on a new tank.

Those pictures are from Mikes custom cars in S.C . He is doing my car with mini tubs, and is doing the tank like that so I don't need the Ricks tank. I think he also has pictures of it mounted in the car on his site.
