Bat cables burned up
 

So I got my Firebird back together this evening and made a couple of laps around the block then the new cables fried. One thing I noticed when I reconnected the battery was the horn which previuosly hadn't worked began sounding so I disconnected the horn wire. I put a grant wheel on it a few weeks ago. I'm not good at electrical so ant help would be awesome.

About the only thing it could be is a short in your positive battery cable.

I'd begin by checking the positive cable the runs to the starter... make sure that's not shorted somewhere.

so ya'll don't think it could have anything to do with the new steering wheel?

Well, getting back to your original post, you said the cables fried. I assume you mean the positive and/or negative cables, right?

yeah both bat cables are toast. I replaced them a few weeks ago. Maybe something got screwed up when I routed the pos cable under the crossmember.

Trace out the positive cable, it must have rubbed through or the casing got melted by touching the exhaust. It will take a major short to do that to the cables. I've seen that happen to a friend's Camaro, the starter lead touched the header and caused a dead short. It got so hot we could see it glowing.
