I currently have a 454 block at a machine shop. It has been bored to take a 4.25 stroke is already .60 over. The motor has forged crank, rods and pistons. My issue is with head and cam selection. I'm looking for guidance. The motor will be in a street car and I'm aiming for 10:1 comp. I am leaning toward Dart Pro 1 heads but need help choosing which heads to go with.

My options are 310's or 325's. Which will be more street friendly? Direction with the cam would also be greatly appreciated.

I have a fresh 489 going in my project. It's got 325cc Dart Pro 1 heads and a crane cams .632 hydraulic roller. It made 593 hp and 587 ftlbs with 9.6 to 1 compression. You can expect 600/600 all day. Dyno graph looks great. Peak torque at 3700 and Hp at 6000. I think it's got more hp in it, but they cut it off at 6000. Ihave the dyno video on the first page of my project. Head and cam selection is open to lots of possibilities. Todds set up is a nice set up, and not to radical based on what I know about it.

As for heads, Dart's are good and I have run them for years. But right now AFR has them covered. We really need to know about car in general, your needs and goals. You could put some 310s and a nice hydraulic or hydraulic roller, A Air Gap intake and make 550 to 600 Or you could run a solid roller and pick up a bit. or step up to 325 - 330 heads and a big hydralic roller, single plain intake and start looking to 650+, but you will move your powerband up and exteend your RPMS.

This is all a very general response to a very general question.

I apologize for not having more specifics. All in all I'm looking for a weekend warrior type setup. The car will not see the track often, I'm looking for a setup that will be a fun light to light motor. I do plan on running an Air gap and would like to keep the power band in the 1500-6500 range. Hydraulic roller is preferred. I'm kinda lost as far as cam selection. I've been told to base the cam on the head size and then vice versa without getting a definitive answer. I spoke to a tech at Dart who advised to go with 310 runners. Then others have told me to go with 325's.......Back and forth back and forth.....

Given what you said, you might look at smaller runners than the 325s and 310s, given that your intended use is just the street and your RPM range. I have a 489 with pretty similar rpm range and goals that you have, that I wanted as wide a power band as possible. I ended up going with the Brodix RaceRight Oval ports in 270cc, also using a RPM Air Gap. I think any of Dart, AFR or Brodix you can't go wrong with. You might also check out Comp Cams Thumpr line of hydraulic roller cams.

Right now the motor is broken in but not in the car yet, but it has a nice sound on the engine stand, and Desktop Dyno puts it right in the 600 range in torque and hp. 500ft/lbs off idle :) You can check out my build in my sig.

Whatever you go with you do want to match all your parts to the intended rpm range of your application you will make the most power that way. Look at the RPM ranges of different heads, intakes and cams to help make your selection.

I had a similar build that i sold in order to build a TT LS2. I had a .060 over, 4.25 stroke, DART Pro 1 heads, with 325 intake runners and a solid Herbert roller with .680/.688 lift, 11.0:1 comp. ratio all backed by a Richmond 6-speed. Not really sure about dyno specifics, but I do know the engine had an enormous amount of torque. I think the cam that I chose was a little on the mild side in terms of lift. It had alot of duration something like 256/268 @ .050. The engine was very strong as well as responsive. In a 69 Camaro with a 6-speed, it was really nice. Just remember, rectangular ports usually work better in a strip/drag car. Oval ports make a better choice for BBC that pretty much live on the street. Be sure to be honest with yourself reguarding the use of the vehicle and choose a cam that will deliver the power that you want for the type of driving that the car will regularly be used for. Yeah I saw that article after I built my motor, pretty similar parts (makes me very hopeful :thumbsup: ).

if you go alum heads, there no reason not to go 11-1 or under, your gonna run 93 octane anyway, so the extra point in compression is worth 50 hp or plus theres nothing like a bbc with alittle compression.
vinnys motor goes like this
10.60 @ 130 in the 1/4
top 5 run thru the hills 3 autocross
3000k stall, crusises at 2200 nice
496,4.310 bore, 4.25 stroke
scat 4340 crank,6.385 rods (200 thou longer then stock) h beam
afr 315 cnc heads killer, angle cut to 108 cc
wiseco forged piston, 10cc dome to achieve 10-9-1 with .040 head gasket
isky redzone roller lifters,manley swedged end push rods
ultradyne solid roller cam, .710 lift, 262,266 [email protected] on a 110
lunati alum roller rockers
dart ported single plane intake
pro systems custom built carb, based on a hp1000, this is the key, i did not turn a screw on the carb, when i did i screwed it up,lol, well worth the 800 bucks, hell a stock hp is 650-700, this is custom built, with lifetime tuning from todd at pro systems
2 inch primary headers, 3 inch oval exhaust with oval x pipe, going to pro mod spin tech mufflers, and 3 inch round tailpipes
that is full exhaust on his car in the drag video.
motor is 660-700 hp at flywheel, produces 540-580 rwhp, we will have exact numbers soon.

Here is the proof....http://i268.photobucket.com:80/album...hocked1060.flv Definitely a stout setup. I went with a little less compression due to our 91 octane fuel that is oxegenated sometimes. Now the solid roller can always be changed but for now I don't want to mess with valve adjustments. I bet it's not near as bad as myold small block. Seems like I was adjusting them every other week.
