Convince me or talk me out of a forged crank
I'm currently building a 496bbc. I'm just curious if a forged crank is worth the extra money. I'm going with forged pistons and h-beam rods. I was told that a forged crank is not necessary for my power goals (600-700.) I'm just thinking the extra money may be worth the piece of mind. This will be for a street car.

I think if it's n/a, it'd be fine with a cast crank. Anyone who's ever laid a bbc crank in, knows how damn massive those things are.
But if you want the piece of mind, go for the forged unit. Might help with resale if that's of any concern. |
go forged, just in case, you already have forged and h beam other parts, the extra 2 to 300 will be worth it, scat had a 4130 crank that was priced between the cast and 4340 crank and is a super nice piece.
check with mike at lewis racing engines, hes a sponsor on chevelles and does the best engine work around, he is in northern california |
Or for expandability, if you ever plan on really upping your HP, that way your bottom end is still set.

today you can get a decent forged crank from Scat or Eagle for not much more than a good cast crank, so it seems to make sense to spend a little more for the forged. Many years ago it was a much bigger price difference between the two, but not anymore.
To answer your question, a good cast crank should survive fine at that power level, but I'd opt for a forged only because it isn't much more and gives that much more strength and resale value. Jody |
