DIFFERENCE__BETWEEN__18´s,__20´s__OR__22´s
 

Hello folks!

I planed to run my 68 Impala, which is going to be with 540BBC twin turbo, on 20/22 inch torque thrusts.

Then, many people told me with that amount of power I will only have tire smoke with such tires due to the less side wall height.

I dont want to go with 15´s by all means and so I decided to keep the same tire outside diameter but to decrease the rim diameter by using 18´s (talk about the rear wheels).

Now I wonder if it makes a difference if I go with 20 or even 22 inch or with 18 and therefor more side wall height (would be one 1-3 inch more side wall, depends on the used tire).

If so I would go with M/T drag radials or maybe BF Goodrich´s DR, you can give me a recommendation on that.

Meanwhile I saw that they also offer 20" DR but how I said, I have been told the magic is in the side wall height.

In the members rides gallery I see almost only 20 and 22 inch wheels and I cannot imagine that none of that cars got a punchy engine, so what is your experience?

In your opinion, will I improve traction by going down to 18" and what about 20" DR?

I think there's only 1 car in the Members section that has 22's. Almost all the cars on this site are running 17's ~ 20's.

20, 22, whatever, I can even have less side wall height on a 15 inch rim.
bad traction with less tire side wall height and if one or two inches increase of side wall height will make a difference or not.

If not I can go with 20/22 but if I will go with 18´s and more tire.

I need an answer to that question.

I think it would looks like that or hopefully a bit milder:

17/18" wheels seem to be were the best return per $ is. The larger wheels usually are only needed if you have to clear really large brakes. 17/18 rim opens up modern tire choices. Anything larger and the weight of the rim starts to affect handling.

if you put 17s or 18s on a 68 impala it will still look like 15s , i think a 60-68 impala looks the best on 19s front and 20s rear .

With a twin turbo 540BBC your going to have tire smoke with anything short of a pure drag racing slick. There will be no difference in performance of a 18 with a drag radial and a 20 with a drag radial.....there both going up in smoke at the crack of the throttle. Put 19,20 or 20, 22 and then get another set of rear wheels for drag racing the car

you will no hook a car that makes over 800hp on the street at all... you will just have tire spin/shake takes a well prepped road or drag strip too hook up even the guys with big 33x18" tires still spin them on the street at 600hp because roads are not prepped for that kind of use

Right, 17 or 18 will not bring the look I am after, it would almost look stock.

To buy 15" for the strip is not a solution since I never go to a strip, I want to have street performance.
I need to outperform all the ricers we got in Austria and the ugly Bimmers as well.
The white 61 Impala in the members ride section got the look I would loooove.:hail:

So how many of you think a 18" DR with more side wall height would not stick better then a 20 or 22 inch tire with small height?
Is the tire wrinkleing (I think it is called wrinkle) not that important to get traction?

(are there 20 or even 22 inch DR available???)

Nitto just came out with a 305/35/20 Drag Radial. I put it on a 20x10 on the back of my 55 chevy. It's a sweet, sticky tire. Modern size, sticky tread, best of both worlds. Think about this tire for your car... Like Kenny said, those year Impala's need big wheels.

They need it by all means:lol:

That would be great, if there would be a possibility to run big rims with traction.
I also ordered a book about 4-link, that should also bring a lot and I pack anything possible in the back of the car like batterie, radiators and and a fuel cell that got not a square shape but width small shape to have all the fuel in the latest point of the trunk.

Also think about to sell my 540 short block to buy an aluminum block, if someone sells something please offer.

So you say the Nitto is a f......g sticky tire, right?
