Wooden Supercar 240 MPH

Hi all,

Just passing along something you may not have heard about - yet. It's a 240 mph almost all wood supercar. It's in this months Wood magazine. We know how hard it is to screw a metal car together - imagine building one outta wood from the ground up ! It's cherry wood veneer on the outside, a balsa core and bamboo strips on the inside.

The story, pics and build info are at the following:

A few of my friends were at the IWF show in Atlanta when they showed it there. I think they may have debuted it there????

Their comments were that it was pretty awesome from a technology/functional standpoint. They thought that some of the fit and finish of the body left a bit to be desired. That seemed unfortunate considering the amount of work that went into this thing. These friends aren't necessarily "car guys".

All-in-all they said it was a pretty amazing piece. It'll be interesting to see how it performs.

The coolest part of the build for me was when they were researching a way to replicate the Corvette style transverse leaf out of wood. They researched recurve bow and arrows and decided to build it out of laminated osage orange.

I also like the fact that they swapped the heads around to run the intake ports on the outside of the V and the exhaust in the middle to keep the heat more localized.

OK - I'll let you read their site....

Later,

Brandon

I know John, big airplane guy. He definitely knows his wood. I saw the CAD drawings on this project several years ago when they started doing the first laminations. It will be incredible if they ever get it finished.
