how much can i Narrow my 12 bolt rear??
 

hi guys,

I have a 1972 442 convert A-body. how narrow can i go on the new rear end without having to tub or modify anything else?? also when you narrow the rear do the shocks still mount up without modifying anything???? i wanna try to obtain as much lip as possible without tubbing plus im running the c6 z06 brake kit.

We have a couple customers we have had Mosers built for and about 1" per side is going to be it. Look up ZZ3Elcamino on here and he has a 1" per side narrow rim and a 5" lip on his Forgelines. Makes a big difference.

I think you will need to do a bit of measuring. The brakes you have chosen (same ones I'm running) require quite a bit of space (look at the Corvette wheels) so I am not sure you will be able to get a lot of lip. To run Corvette wheels I will need to run a spacer somewhere around 1-1/2 to 2 inches, so I would guess that is the most you can narrow each side.

As for the shocks, I think you will run into a bit of trouble there, there isn't much room between the axle flange and the shock mounts.

My suggestion is to mock up the brakes and measure.

Now, post some pictures of that 442!

you need a ~1.5" pad on the wheel to fit the c6z brakes. if you narrow it 1" you'll end up with about .5" less of a lip than with other brake packages on a rear that hasnt been narrowed.

as said above, theres not much room btwn the flange and the shock mount. theres only so much they can go before they run out of room to reweld the flange.

on top of that, the c6z calipers are wide, so you need to make sure you have enough caliper to frame clearance.

i have the same brake package for my 70 velle and i am in the process of doing numerous modifications all started by the brakes. narrowed rear with 9" ends, all new brackets with parallel ucas, coilovers and a watts link...........

i stand corrected. i think btwn 4 and 5 inches they are wide, but anything over makes them "freakin wide". these do fall into the freakin huge category.
