Dilema...
(New guy here) For those of you not familiar with my intro post, I'm a U.S. Marine deployed to Iraq and I recently purchased a 67 RS/SS with a 350 engine. The car is at my Dad's house and he is doing whatever he is capable of while I am deployed to get the car as drivable as possible by my return. As he tears into my Camaro it's painfully obvious that everything in the car was set up for drag racing. The current turbo 350 is making the engine run about 5k RPM at 50 mph. it has a gear locked out, so it's really only running 2 gears.
I plan on driving the car around for more than just light to light wins. I need to install an automatic with an overdrive. I've been reading the other posts discussing what transmissions are good. I'm probably looking at a 700r4. with that, I have some questions: -Are there any modifications that would need to be made going from a turbo 350 to the 700r4? -Are there any recommended places in the Chicago area that could install and set it up at an affordable price...and in a relatively timely manner? i.e. by Feb and what kinda price am I looking at for the job? I know the trans itself runs around $2k Thanks! -Matt- |
Not an expert on 700r4 but plan on driveshaft length change and crossmember. Most importantly...thanks for fighting for us.

Hmm...Are there any *more* compatible overdrive automatic transmissions out there?

Reading up on it, I'm going to stick with a 700r4. The driveshaft is the only thing I'm really worried about because I dont really have access to anyone who can cut it down and balance it. I'll look into aftermarket driveshafts next.

Teufelhunden, The 200 R4 is the same dimensions as a TH350 and you can keep your current driveshaft as well. Most gear head magazines have a few shops that sell performance 200r4s. Pretty sure that it isn't electronic, so you may not need a controller. Google it, I recall one of the manufacturers having a FAQ page on the in and out of running one.
