what do you actually do to shave the drip rails properly?

Heres what Im trying to do. I still wait the "bump" that runs a long the top of the window frame. So I just cut the rail right off. This in turn leaves a gap where the metal comes together. I spot welded all along the window frame. My hope is that Im not taking much metal off so I wont need a custom window, just a new style seal. The reason why I posted this is because I dont know if that last part is going to work. Heres a pic of mine EARLY on.
