Props to Xtreme Performance Heat Coatings and Tom Nelson
I have a few winter updates going on the Chevelle. One thing I wanted was to get a coating on the turbo headers from Nelson Racing. The longer you run them the more discolored they get, which is normal and unavoidable. I had seen an article in Hot Rod I believe mentioning Xtreme Performance Heat Coatings, and then when Tom Nelson told me that was who did his work I knew I'd give it a shot.
I spoke with Alan over there and he felt that the shiny silver heat barrier coating would work in a street turbo setup. Maybe some slight dulling at the heads but other wise no problems. He also has a black coating that will definitely handle pretty much anything (he uses it on Indy car stuff), but I'd prefer the silver if it'd hold up. He feels the prep and application are absolutely key, and why many do not hold up even when done with a good product. He felt strong enough about it that he told me if it doesn't hold up he'd re-do it in black at no charge. I wouldn't hold him to that, but really appreciated the offer. I've had several headers coated, both from the manufacturer and from local shops, but none look like these. The quality is amazing, I've got a few pics but they do not do the work justice. Much smoother and shinier than any I've seen, very noticeable difference. In addition the price was very good, less than I expected. He doesn't know me from Adam, and still treated me like I was his best customer. So again, thanks to Alan and to Tom Nelson for the recommendation. Alan also does polishing and powdercoating, and even though not local I would not hesitate to send him more stuff to do. Very nice. Looks awesome.

Nice... very interested to see how it holds up.
I've heard good and bad about coating the inside of turbo manifolds... namely that if/when the internal coating flakes, the pieces pass through the hotside of the turbo and can erode & damage the turbine... the flipside being that if you coat only the outside you tend to hold in and concentrate all the heat in the substrate material and shorten its life. If it holds up, I think I'll have them coat my 6.0 truck manifolds. |
Coating the inside of a turbo application would be rolling the dice and not worth it IMO.
