Shaved firewall help

So far so good! My first welding project has been going pretty good. Its been a good learning experience. Ive good pretty much all of it done but the tunnel section. I havent welded it yet because I dont know how high I have to go to fit the LS2. To those that have done it how high did you go up? Past the stock arch so lower? Did you make a new tunnel to weld in of worked the stock firewall to fit? The goal is to keep it as smooth as I can. Thanks for any bit of info!

The LS2 doesn't protrude into the tunnel area. You should only have to modify the tunnel if your particular subrame pushes certain transmissions too high.

I hope that made sense, it's hard to explain. We only had a fab a small part to mate the tunnel to the new firewall, but it didn't raise the tunnel at all.

Got it, thats a good pic. Yes the right side of the tunnel is the only sot I have to work with the rest is pretty much a straight weld. Thanks for the pic.

Hadn't punched them in yet.. sorta forgot :_paranoid

They are now proudly present.

We also need to put in holes for the AC bulkheads and wiring.

I works pretty good and seems easier than patch working it flat. The story will be in the May issue of CP. Let me know if you need more info sooner.

Did you guys just weld up a sheet over the original firewall? Or did you cut out the old one in certain areas?

Hey, I just had Best of Show make a firewall for my 69 right after they did the one for Steve's Track Rat. They cut out all of the old firewall and replaced it with a with a piece of sheet metal cut from a cardboard/foamcore like template. Here are some pics they took.

There's the old one:

and the new one.

Yea, I showed up there right after you left... looked great!

What's funny is that BOS had a run on doing these with FOUR cars in the shop getting it done. They said it was a like a smooth firewall assembley line.

Your firewall certainly looks cleaner now compared to what the other shop did.

Most of the old firewall is still there. Any areas the "stuck out" were cut away. There will be a complete story in the May issue of Camaro Performers.

Matt@BOS 02-16-2009 01:29 AM

Hmm...didn't know that. I never did look at the car from the inside. I suppose I'm just gonna have to wait for the new Camaro Performers issue to see exactly how those guys replaced everything. Its going to be like a closely guarded secret finally being revealed...well not really.

Oh and did D!ck ever get a shot to line up all of the smoothed firewalls side by side in various stages of completion?

Matt
