Suspension travel question

I have a set of SPC upper A-arms that hit sections of the frame bracketry that holds them on. I have been doing some minor grinding to get some more travel out of the arms, but how much travel is normal? I didn't check with the old set up before I took it all apart so i have nothing to compare it to. It won't see a lot of street use but I don't want it to be air born every bump it hits either. If anyone has any tech articles or info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

whats your application? on my 70 velle, i had to make the front of the a arm mount look like the rear. a lot of material needed to come off, but what was left was more than sufficent.

Its a 72 camaro. Right now from being bottomed out to wheels suspended is about 6 inches.
