Its probably just some antiseize compound....alot of antiseize is silver, but with the heat, I wouldnt be supprised if it discolored to look like that

isnt it the same thread locker thats on the dampener bolt.... its allready on the bolt in dried form when you unpack it from the GM wrapper...

as for antiseize.. be suer its compatible with alloy heads fi you decide to put it on.. i like the graphite/moly stuff from mercedes myself....

I dont think its antiseze since it seems to have dried hard and flaky like a thread locker, but not sure. Its amazing how many gook products gm is using from the Henkel corperation, I dont think they use lock washers anymore.

As for the damper/crank bolt I just ordered two of them since they are TTY and right out of the bag they were dry, nothing on the threads.

I'm glad this doesn't have to do with race. Whew!

What did the bolts hold down?

The red stuff on the underside of the crank bolt is a sealant to prevent any oil from coming out should it makes its way through the press fit. Typically, on bolts such as pad abutment brackets, it is a loctite type stuff.

header/exhaust manifold bolts - high heat- maybe loctite 201 not sure, it is yellow

I.D.'d the gook

The gook -- you're seeing is a GM thread locker

It's GM PART # 89021297

Remember you're doing ALUMINUM with steel bolts -- you don't want to gall the aluminum and then strip the threads if you try to take them out " next time ".
