Valve Cover Clearance
 

I have a problem, I ordered the GM Performance 12480127 valve covers to go on my 327 w/roller rockers, and of course the baffle seems to hit the rockers. Even with the rocker horizontal and neither end at the apex of its lift the cover looks about 2 inches too short.

I thought about grinding off the baffle, but then if I install grommet and push a breather into the opening the breather would possibly hit the rocker, no?

The problem is GM does not make this valve cover in a tall version and have the same finish, the tall ones all seem to be powder coated. I was trying to keep the engine looking black, and aluminum.

Any suggestions on how to proceed, or ideas for valve covers would help, thanx!

well guess I did not look hard enough. There is a tall version that looks like the short version. The images I found online of the tall one did not look like right, but according to my local shop they are the same, just with no oil/pcv holes.

He also said the short and tall version are only 1 inch different, and if I had the short ones just run spacers... Anyone else running the short covers with roller rockers, and if so how did you do it?

I've heard of people running two gaskets to gain a little more clearance. I also believe there are thicker gaskets.

May work if you're close.

You could always just run stock rockers.

We decided to just return them instead of buying spacers, and get some new tll ones.

When you get the tall ones you have to drill your own holes for the oil fill/PCV. I've tried several different types of rubber baffles/grommets and none of them are worth a damn. Summit offers a screw in aluminum baffle that has worked fine for me. Good luck! Mike

I have the big block version of those covers. I had to drill my own PCV holes and I used a Moroso baffled rubber grommet(Summit part # MOR-68775) for the hole openings. The grommet leaked slightly at first so I pulled it out and put some black RTV high-temp silicone in the groove of the grommet, re-installed, wiped off any excess, and it's been leak-free ever since. Just be sure not to drill the holes too large. Drill it slightly too small and then slowly enlarge it with a metal file until you get a tight fit. I also found that the following Fel Pro gaskets worked beautiful with these covers:
Summit Part # FPP-1635. They re-seal wonderfully and look a little better than the cork. I think they're worth the extra money.
