To Buy XFI or not?

For my 67 camaro Hybrid I plan on puchacing an OEM ls2 dropout from a GTO or Caddy. I plan on puting it in stock getting it driving till the next winter, then modding. Plans incude heads and Cam and possiable a turbo or superCharger eventually.

With that said does it make sense to go right for the XFI?

Or just this http://www.shopfbparts.com/servlet/Detail?no=159

Or just have the stock harness reworked? Keeping in mind I would wnat to move the majority of the eletronics inside and the GTO OE harness would need to be lenghtened.

So based on my research Stock harness rework + Vats reprogram 600.00

The above GMPP Nicer cleaner ready to run $850.00 But again only one tune.

Lastly XFI lots of felxability but Costly

XFI ECU 301000 2194.43
-XFI engine harness 301101 465.43
-XFI Injector Harness 301202 159.53
-FAST XIM Ignition Box and Harness 301311 687.44
-XFI Ignition Adapter harness 301311k 106.00
-CAN Retrofit Kit 301412 34.94
-XFI 25’ ECU cable 308014 133.00
-USB to Serial Adapter 307044 39.83

Total $3820.60

Thoughts appreciated

I'd wander over to LS1Tech and do some searching there. From what I have seen, the factory ECMs work well (with tuning) for the vast bulk of their builds, including some pretty radical combinations.

Yep been there but not much feedback to speak of.

First off, don't pay anywhere near that much for your XFI if you do it. Call us first.

Second, the factory ECM is pretty damn smart with the right tuner on it. The GMPP unit can have a VIN flashed into it and is tunable but you will want to hire a pro to do the tuning. However, if you want to play tuner yourself, you might as well go XFI or Accel Thruster. While one could buy a HP tuner and tune a factory ECM, it is really not very NEW USER freindly.

Yeah, I don't know where you got those prices for your XFI, but they are higher than giraffe's(you know what). Anyway, I'm actually going thru the exact same thing right now as we speak. I bought all of that XFI stuff. I mean every single piece. Only to find out from networking on this site I got a far better deal with the OEM stuff from John at Speartech. So, I sent all that stuff back to Jegs, got my money back and saved over $1500 which enabled me to buy some other things for another one of my projects. That's what I like about Jeg's. If you buy something from them, you have a full year to return it. I hate companies where you only get like 30, 60, or 90 days to return something. Hell, in our hobbies of restoring cars there's no telling when you have to put a project on hold or change your mind about something. Then your 90 days has expired and the company laughs at you when you call for a refund or a credit. Again, call john at Speartech if you are going with the stock stuff. John's great. I called him 1,000 times with all types of questions and he answered every, single one of them. If you are going with the XFI call Frank @ Prodigy. He will give you way better prices than what you have quoted on here.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Also learned somthing. (I still have to confirm)

THE oem GTO motor has a 24 tooth reluctor and the GMPP harness works only with 58 tooth engines.

A 24 tooth reluctor just use a F body ECM, Speartach or Street and Performance. Hell, use the GTO box if it comes with the motor?

Here is where I was thinking. The motor comes complete with harness ecu FBW throttle the whole thing. So I was thinking try to get some $$ off by telling the vendor to keep the ecu and harness. Then go with the GMPP speartech or XFI.
I do want the flexability to have a touring (good mileage) tune and a Track tune and be able to swap.

Thanks for the help!

OH and BTW Frank not sure if you are still into Drag racing but was wondering if you are attending the Orlando World street nationals this year? I heard its a great event and was thinink of looking for any PT activities while down there.

I thought early 05 LS2's (like my GTO) had the 24X reluctor but by 06 had changed to 58X.

That is good info as well. I did put in my post on LS1tech that I wanted the 06 GTO (400 HP) LS2. I believe the 05 had 400 HP as well?
The devil is definalty in the details which is why this site is so Key!
