Having trouble finding wheels to fit DSE subframe
I have a 69 Camaro with the DSE subframe. I plan on running 6 piston Wilwood brakes. I'm trying to get wheels to fit in the 17" diameter. I currently have Famosa Standard on the rear and I went to order the front wheels and was told that I can't run a 6 piston caliper with that wheel unless it's fat lip. I know that I can't run a 17" fat lip wheel on the DSE subframe.
I would like to stay with 17" wheels -- does anybody know if that's possible? Thanks in advance for any help! |
Why can't you run a 17" fatlip on a dse sub? 9" is the max width. http://detroitspeed.com/productpages/subframe.htm

DSE tells me I can't run a 17" fatlip with the DSE subframe.

Hope you find a solution to your problem. Good luck! |
Actually you would have better luck running a 17" wheel that IS NOT a fat lip. Fat lip wheels have the step lip on the inside of the wheel making for less caliper clearance. A step lip wheel (step lip on the outside of the wheel) is fat lip on the backside, so more caliper clearance.
What brakes do you have? What wheels are you looking at? |
I had the exact same issue with my fontana's when I switched to the AME frame. Budnik does not make a 17" wheel that will work with the C6 subframes and wilwood 6 piston brakes. I was just going to have my Fontanas rehooped but it couldn't be done. I switched to Fikse Profil 5S 17x9 wheels. I got both the wheels and brakes from Frank. I love the change and the Fikse's weigh a fraction of the weight of the Budniks.

Your going to run into the same problem with any 2 piece wheel Manufacture.... Most Rim Outers are built by the same company or have the same specs.

18's look so much better on a pro touring car anyway.

Thanks
Thanks for your responses.
Frank, in answer to your questions, I have the Wilwood 6 piston brake kit with a 13" rotor for C5 setup for DSE subframe. I have Budnik Famosa 17 x 11on the rear purchased 2 years ago and recently found out that these wheels in the front will not work with the brake kit. I don't know what to do at this point. I'll probably have to go with 4 completely new wheels for this to work. Any suggestions you may have I'd appreciate -- I'd like to call you and discuss it with you if possible. If you know anybody that would be interested in the 2 back wheels that I have let me know. They are 5 on 4-3/4; 4.5 inch backspacing with Michelin Pilot SP2 335/35/17 - never used. Thanks again. |
Your welcome to call anytime 8AM to 10PM eastern.
The 17" Budniks are fatlip style so they are stepped on the rear, and will not clear your brakes, A 3 piece stepped lip wheel like a Boze, Fikse, Forgeline will clear those brakes. Also, some 17" 2 piece and cast wheels might clear depending on the exact wheel. Like i said, make a phone call. |
