17" or 18"?

trying to decide between 17" or 18"
I am mainly concerned with fitting the widest tire/rim combo possible uner the car

I have a 72 and went with 18's

Here's one we did with 19s all the way around in stock wheelwells as an example of diameter not affecting fitment.

Along with this one running 18s all the way around.

Given your main concern of using the widest rim and tire you can, then 17" should make that easier than a taller rim of 18", given a tire of the same height.

anyone else?

I think Jay's pics say it all...definitely 18's. More room for brakes as well which is never a bad thing. Assuming similar tire heights, wheel diameter doesn't really play a role in determining your max width for fitment purposes as the outside profile of the tire remains the same.
