how long do you guys let your primer cure out
wondering how long to wait for all the solvents to escape/?thank you
best is 1 week or more, and if its sunny out get it out in the sun.
if it's a high dollar job,I like to let it sit for a good month
Thats what my painter wants me to wait atleast a month.
the longer you wait, the less chances of any shrinking of bodywork or other materials show up in the paint surface.Try to push the car and let it sit and cook in sunlight during the day for as long as possible and if possible, repeat everyday. Some shops are usually dark and cool and without some heat all materials applied on the shell may not fully cure or will never have a chance to shrink and settle. With that said, you don't want streaks/ spots of filler or not fully cured primer ruin a nice paint job
while i agree to a point with longer is better, if you bring the panel to the temp specified by the primer manufacturer for the time said, it should be fully cured, period. while we know this is not true in alot of cases, this is where higher end materials, which use better ingredients shine above all.
we have to be serious, there are not many car owners who want to see the car at a standstill for 30 days for primer, when more then likely it will be primed 2-3 times. |
Depends on how nice you want the final product to be? Anytime you mix material with solvents and spray it on a panel it's going to take UV and time to soak out/cure. If you have a paint shop with a bake system the end result can be achieved in a shorter time period. But it still takes time to make it "right". And a customer that wants it right will understand the timeline when the process is explained to him/her.

I work part time at a body shop. We do alot of frame up resto's. All I can say is we let it set for about a week before we start working the panel. We let cars set about 2 weeks before we color sand and buff a car. I have never seen a problem with any of them as of yet. My truck was painted this way over 3 years ago and have had no issues with it. Just my two cents 30 days is way to long.
