2nd gen brakes
Hey all,
I took my '71 Camaro to Portland International Raceway for its first track day last month, and discovered that those Baer Track brakes are maybe not the ultimate solution when you're heading into turn 4 at 140 MPH. I'm looking to upgrade at least the fronts. Baer has the new 6 piston caliper design for 2nd gens, but only with a 14" rotor that would require me to swap out my 17" wheels. I'm leaning toward doing that anyway, but what other solutions are out there? Will the new ATS AFX spindle work on a 2nd gen? I see it is supposed to be a direct swap out for B-body spindles on an A-body, and the 2nd gen F-body spindle is basically the same as the B-body. The AFX spindle would obviously open up some more brake possibilities. Thanks for any advice you folks can give. |
These guys are developing a great kit for the 2nd gen. They may even have it done now...

I'd guess that the Touring Classic kit is not that much different than what he has now.
PTAddict, (name?) what specifically were you having problems with? What kind of pads were you using? Street pads are not meant to haul you down from 140, is that what you have? Some more info would be helpful, but throwing parts at a problem is not always the answer. |
brake up grade
Hi PTaddict, ATS will not be offering a 2nd gen spindle till probably next year. The early A body is same as the F body with ecception of the steering arm.
We can set you up with a front kit and you should have no problem stopping. And you can swap it over to an ATS spindle later if you choose. Can you tell me the set up your running now? Specifics needed : C4 or C5 based? Rotor type? Master cylinder and booster size and type? Vehicle modifications : Weight tire size. And what size tire you would be limited to. Email me if interested Vin |
I think you found the limit of basic street pads. Go with something more aggressive and you'll notice a difference. You may be impressed, actually.
