2nd Gen?
 

Hello folks I am new to this site and would like to say its awsome! My question is "What would be the best way to lower a 2nd gen Trans Am up front?" could I go with springs, or should I go with spindles? I am not building a radical ride, but I would like to see it a lil lower. The car has the 17" snowflakes all around with the 403 motor. I am sure the may be a rookie question for most of you guys, but I wanna do it once. Thanks alot folks.

lots of great cars and ideas plus advice! Im running QA-1 adjustable coil-overs I got from Jegs. They work great on my 72 Z28 and also improved the handling!:thumbsup:

Wellcome to the board, answer your question, when lowering a vehicle you MUST increase the spring rate to avoid bottoming out, second you will improve the ride and the handling, third it's the most economical/ functional way to lower your car, forth you old springs probably need changing any way.

On the subject of droped spindles, IMHO/facts, one of the worst things done to practical vehicles, the problems: limits back spacing options on wheels (big problems for Camaros), increases scrub radius, lowers the car without increasing spring rate causing bottoming out.

unless things have changed heidts only has one spindle, to fit 1st gens, 2nd gens, A-bodies how does that work!!!!???? for starters, ball joint tapers are not the same, outer wheel bearing are not all the same, bolt on steering arms, how many are available? do they correct bump steer on 3 different front geometries, do they allow for more back spacing, IIRC they are not even as tall as the stock 2nd gen spindles so it would affect the geometry in a negative way, not to mention special brakes.

Using lowering spindles does not change any of the handling characteristics of the vehicle, they merely lower the car by the said amount, and they can cause turning radius issues if you go too extreme. The advantage to springs is they allow the tuner (manufacturer) to pick spring rates that better control the available suspension travel as well as increase the rate to give the vehicle a firmer feel and better handling. So with springs, you get improved stance and better drivability.
