rims

with carefull measurement you can easily get 9.5's in the rear and run a 275-285 tire.
For the 8's 4.75-5" should work fine. If you choose to go 9.5's in the rear then its 5.5". But please measure to be sure. Vin

I thought a 315 on an 11" wheel would fit a 70-72 chevelle??

Just ordered my wheels from Billet Specialties, GTX70's.
17x11 w/6"bs in back and 17x9 1/2 w/5.5bs in front, now all I've got to do is wait 4 or 5 weeks to see if I was right on the backspacing

From what I've heard, you need 5.75" backspace to fit the 17x11's in the rear. At least that's what was on the Redline Oil Chevelle. Your fronts are right on.

I played it safe with the 6" backspacing on the rear, I thought I could adjust them with a spacer. I measured with the tire on and found that 5.5 in the rear would work, so 5 3/4" sounds about right, I've got rear disc's on the way, so that might add a little. Tire is a Nitto 315/35/17 Drag radial. Added Adustable upper A-arms to the front, to make sure wheels would fit, can't wait to get it back on the road to test the suspension mods.

I know that we are talking about larger diameter wheels, but I had 15x10 gm rallys on my 70 Chevelle with 5.5in b/s and had not one rubbing issue. No suspension or fender lip mods. The tire was a 295/50-15. The cross section or width still translates whether it's a 15in or 20in.....the b/s is what you really have to pay close attention to.

You need at least 6" on a 17x11 wheel w/315 tire. It's always better to have too much backspacing than too little. Too much can be corrected with spacers. Too little means buying a wheel with more.
