GM steering spline question
 

I have a Lee power steering box and I have the wrong woodward shaft to steering box adaptor (it was for a manual box). On there web page they list for a 700 series and a 600 series box. I know its not the same as the 600 spline but is this 700 series the same? Anyone know the diameter and spline for sure off hand of the Lee 800 ps boxes? I don't have anything to acurately measure it with tonight, but I do have an idea wich one is right, I just don't want to influence what anyone says.

The paragraph below is from an article in the Feb 2009 issue of Chevy Hi Performance on how to install an 800-series box in a 64-77 Chevelle. It lists two sizes of splines -- one for a "late" box and one for an earlier box. The 800 Saginaw box I have lying around (66 G-body) has the 13/16 in./36 spline shaft. That shaft uses the Woodward 104 u-joint end (.820 in.). A link to the article is also listed below.

Quote from the article: "Late-model steering boxes also utilize a ¾-inch, 30-spline stub shaft, while early boxes are equipped with a 36-spline, 13/16-inch shaft. Lee offers a steering coupler (as known as a rag joint), which has the late 30-spline count with the proper bolt spacing to line up with the early steering columns. To use this coupler, you will need to drill out one of the bolt holes in the steering column to 3/8 inch. On the early columns, both attaching holes are 5/16 inch."

Thanks Pappy. I have 36 spline and I had the .820-36 Woodward u-joint circled, its allways good to ask for a second opinion. I just wasn't sure why they say 700 box and don't mention 800. Pretty sure we got the right one. I just don't need another $60 useless u-joint hanging around. :cheers:

I know what you mean. I've changed suspensions in my car so many times that I have almost a complete selection of unused Woodward u-joints for about any combo of boxes, racks, and columns, not to mention a few Borgeson joints in the mix. I now have a Woodward power rack and the Woodward column. As a side note,I had Woodward build my intermediate shafts -- perfect alignment of the splined ends for phasing, and I trust their welding and heat treating more than my own on a part that critical.
