Steering Wheel Controls
 

Hello:

I'm going to try and add some controls to my steering wheel so I don't have to take my hands off of it.

Can you give me some recommendations what you think would be handy?

Left Blinkers
Right Blinkers
Horn

What would you add?

the horn is a classic upgrade when your talking steeringwheel controlls.. :D
kidding aside the blinkers are pretty easily accessible as they are imho..
Since you have a manual tranny paddle shifting is not easy or cheap but a possibility http://www.mastershift.com/p_street_manual.html

but you need to move stuff to the steering wheel that you actually have to reach for... shifter, linelock, radio, nitrous, purge, wipers? intercom/radio, shock stifness (ned ridetech shocks)

Put a kill switch right where you can bump it while autocrossing, that way everyone will have an advantage over you when you accidentally hit it while thrashing the wheel !!!!

Putting controls on the wheel that are major controls is like going into TOYOTA territory. Controls for your Ipod or some other non driving purposeful type widget is not going to cause you problems but things you have to have work at all times for being legal or safe should be refrained from. If you never plan on driving your car at an autox or road coarse you will be ok but don't go into territory that can cause you problems you don't need.

Put another way.

Steer clear of of steering obstacles and have clear steering.

I understand what you are saying.

The main reason for asking is several fold.

1) I'm going to build this car, and I can do basically whatever I want to it. It will be fun to build and later to drive. Here is a possible area of the car that can be customized. What have people done in the past that has proven to work well. (If anything)

2) Temporary Left and Right Blinkers is one. When merging through traffic the signal could be pushed on for a second or so without having to take your hands off the wheel

3) A horn bottom that does the same thing so you don't have to take your hand off the wheel while possible having to make a quick avoidance of something (I had one of these on my truck and it has been really nice. Except I had the button on the floor where I could use my left foot to honk it.)

I'm not sure I understand the TOYOTA reference? However, many of the upper end cars have some steering wheel controls. The Ferrari 430 is one that comes to mind.

4) In Texas it gets blistering Hot. I fully intend to run a cool shirt when necessary to keep the window down. A small knob to adjust the water speed through the shirt would be pretty handy if it will work, given you will probably be in a harness and will possibly have a hard time reaching the dash.

5) A inter com button when speaking with someone sitting next to you and it is to loud to speak easily. Like being in a open cockpit airplane.

6) If you have a screen that you read some of the information about the current state of the car. You might have to toggle through to the correct screen

7) Traction Control adjustment

8) Map Light

Things like this is what I had in mind, but I figured this group might have some good ideas given our experience. I still deal with the issue of difficulty lifting my arm completely.

I hope maybe this makes things a bit more clear.

The Mastershift seems like it would be a great deal, but the Video's they have on their website are the Sorryest Video's I have ever seen for a products. It is shocking they would ever sell one, with the marketing skills shown in those video's.

It shows shifting while the tranny is on a table, but in all 4, never to they run through the shifts while it is in the car being used.

Absolutely astounding!!

Check out how bad those Video's Suck.

If you find a video that actually shows the product being used, please post it.

I called the guy about them, and here is suppose to be getting me some good, "In the Car", youtube files. Most of the stuff on their site does not show the item really working. Too much music, and other things going on EXCEPT showing the product.

Ok, Your strapped into your car, so you can drive it hard and you want to stay on your side of the car. You cannot lean forward enough to reach anything.

Maybe this is a condition that you have never been in, or thought of, but It does exist. I know it can't be a completely stupid idea because of two letters. "F1"(Formula One)

To Be honest, I'm not sure anyone would NEED any advantage against me in a autocross.:yes: :D

Just think though how embarrassing it would be to accidentally get beat by me.:unibrow:
