IRS help? no not the government
Hey guys, I'm building a special in my 1996 F body for myself, right now all i got going is the rolling body, and a sweet emblem for motivational purposes:

Anyways, i would like to put a IRS in the rear, and i would love to salvage something from another car, rather a c5 over a c4, i'mleaning towards the C5 because they have the upper radious arms, though a C4 might be more period correct for the year of the car(i'm building a special edition fake car) This is a site with someone who has done a C4 swap, but i dont really like all the stress put on the half shafts. http://zeuscatalog.com/jay_cutshaw_s_irs_swap Now to what i need help with, i found out on my own that 21st century street machines had/has made a plate to adapt the rear diff to use of a drive shaft, on a C5 differental, but there site isnt even down, its none exsistant. So, I need help sourcing info to make this plate myself, or someone else who does, and any disscution about the topic is very very welcome to. Thanks. Bob |
the stresses on the halfshafts from cornering are nothing compared to the load from the torque... just look at the u joint strength compared to a typical upper balljoint...
a c4 rear will install with a minimum of cutting, where as a c5/6 will require the removal of the floor above the rear to make room... yu will also need to modify the tunnel to make room for the transaxle, |

If someone can show me a heavy car thats been beet on with alot of G's, and this rear has help up, i would start to lean towards it, as these rears are about half the price to buy, but its still old technology. |

I dont mean to come off cockey or argumentive. I'm just throwing what i've found out about the rear end out there, i guess i should have mentioned i plan on hitting atleast 500 Whp, so the Dana 36 won't hold up to that, *If i'm correct*
with the G's (and i'm not talking about my friends in the ghetto, but a unit of inertial force on a body that is subjected to rapid acceleration or gravity) that the rear may experiance, i want to auto cross this car, and have the option of going on a drift course with the opertune chance. I do realise that is acomplishable with both rear IRS's. As i would *imagine* drifting a car would be harder on the rear end with the camber set off, and high RPMS, and there for being harder on the u joints, hubs, and half shafts, where as the dual controll arms would only be hard on the hub. But then again, i dont surly know the answer to that. This thread isnt about what i think, but what i dont know. You clearly know more about the C4 style rear end then i do, and i'm am taking your knowledge as an influence. Again i'm sorry if i came off in any different of a way to you or anyone else. I still need to find out about the adaptor for a C5 rear end how ever. Bob |

Ok om a better mood today, (=didnt kill any patients, and had no complaints...) there is a thread here and i cant fint it for the life of me.. but it shows a c5/6 rear suspension installed in a mid year corvette. but instead of using an adapter plate it simply used a viper diff instead, thar way you could mount the controll arms to your own cradle instead of having to dink arround with modifying the corvette stuff..
but since you are into the drifting scene.. how about widening your search of donor cars: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-T...Q5fAccessories there are a myriad of drift specific parts acailable for supra suspension and this one looks like it snould be a breeze to fit? and re.drilling the spindles for chevy boltpattern (or the fronts for yota so you could run drift style rims) isnt a biggie |

This is what i was originally thinking Jacob, but i couldnt find any information or pictures for any sort of reference to dream up an idea. I knew they were strong, and had some sort of after market for drifting but again didnt find anything when i stripped apart Google, if i did find something is was on a japanese web page, in japanese writing, and i figured it would cost big bucks to no only get it over here, but to get a translator lol nothing is set in stone yet, but ive sourced a few c5 rear ends for under $1200 complete hub to hub, and building the center section/sub frame wouldnt be a choire, i figured if i ended up building it from scratch i could use the 2 front mounting points that were originally for the solid rear end. i was looking at a few pictures too of the room under the trunk/diff area and as long as i go with a fuel cell, i should have plenty of room under there for any contraption i go with :) I'm going to see what i can find for a viper now, more ideas! thanks! |
