295/40-18 on the rear of a 2nd gen Camaro
 

I have a 1971 Camaro. I have been running 285/40-17's on 9.5" wheels on the rear. I am thinking of going to 18's now. Does anyone know if a 295/40-18 on a 10" wheel will fit in the rear without mini tubs? If so, what back space would you recommend? I also want to run a 245 or 255/40-18 on an 8" wheel in the front. what backspace will work here? I have coilovers, so I am trying to get the front fairly low, while still being able to turn without rubbing. Thanks for the help. Jonathan

Hi Jonathan, I will be working on a 73 Camaro soon so I can double check back spacing, but I do believe you are going to need about a 5.5 - 5.75 on the rear with 10" wheel. The 295-40-18 tire will be close you might have to roll the wheel lip. the front should take a 4 - 4.25 back space on a 8" wheel. I will have to confirm these measurements.

I think it'll be tough on a Camaro with the flat top on the wheel well...

My 71 Firebird has Falken 295/40/18s on 18x10 Rushforth Superspokes on the back with the big round wheel wells... with 5.75" backspacing... stock tubs... stock rear end housing etc.

Keep in mind I've got more room without the stock rear leaf springs utilizing the BMR rear torque arm suspension.

295's in the back will be really close, but should be do-able. I assume youre running leaf springs, and if thats the case sometimes the rear end will sit slightly off-center, so Id check that out and make sure youre close enough there. Youll have to beat the seat belt hump in and roll the fender lip a bit, but ive seen 315's on non tubbed cars enough to know it can be done. I think with a 10 inch wheel you want 5.75BS but id double check.

The only solid into I can provide is that a 255 will rub at full lock on the sway bar, might not be an issue on a street car, but if your racing it you will probably rub. A 245 will fit fine though. A 245 will look and fit a 8 inch wheel better too.

255/45's on a 8" wide wheel works beautifully,a 295/40 or 305/35 fits easily as well with some seat belt hump adjustments on a 10" wide wheel with a 5.75" b/s.

The 295/40 will work on a 10" wheel at 5.75"bs you'll just have to roll the lip. As for the front a 245/40 on an 8" wheel with 4.5"bs works for me, but I have the wilwood dynalite hubs. If you want it low with the coilovers you'll need to modify the inner fenders to tuck the front tires.

I've seen 315/35/17s on the back of 2nd gen camaros with the right wheel and maybe a rolled lip and 'massaged' seat belt hump, stock wheel houses.

Yep, 67Lemanster on Nastyz28 IIRC has a 315, no tubbing.

I will be running 285/40/18 on a rushforth 18x10 with 5.75 BS. The 285's have a ton of room. Looks like I could get 305's but not sure with a 10" rim. I agree about the leaf springs. My TA was 1/2" off towards the passenger side. I have coil overs now so that shouldn't be a problem anymore. I will post pics when I get my car back.
