Recommendations...upgrade from points ignition

Looking to upgrade from my stock points and coil system on my 69 BBC. Any advice on a good, clean, and reliable upgrade? I really want to keep the engine bay clean looking, so that is a consideration.

If it is a stock motor I would use just a stock HEI and play with the springs and weights. With a BBC you might have firewall clearance issues though.

I would say a MSD ready to run.

Send it off to Dave Ray for an HEI conversion or MSD trigger conversion!

They're stealthy too!

Install a Pertronix kit and be done with it.

A MSD distributor and 6 box will wake it right up, and if you do FI you will need it.

I've used the Crane points conversion before, and it worked fine.

It has a built in rev limiter.

I've used Davesmallbodyheis before too, but from what I hear, don't be in a hurry to get it back, may take months.

MSD ready to run would probably be your best bet for reliability.

X2. I have used this system on two differnt engines. (a 4x4 truck and my old 68 camaro 327). I had great results with both. On the truck I actually replaced the Crane system with the Pertronix and it helped overall driveability a little. The Crane system was good, but I like the Pertronix better. FYI this one was on a 383 stroker in a heavy 3/4 ton 4x4 truck that I beat the hell out of. Both times they were used with manual transmissions if that matters. I never used one with an auto so can't comment on any differences in set up.
Good luck!

I guess the question now is whether to install the Pertronix Ignitor III with my stock distributor and coil or go to the Pertronix Billet Distributor with the Flamethrower coil.

If your stock distributor is in really good shape and has no slop or bouncing around (good bushings and cam gear) then use it. If you like the look of the new one and need to replace the stock one then you have your answer. I guess it also depends on what look you want. Stock or not?
