went to the strippers

I'm not sure if I started a thread for my car or not, but my firebird had spent some time back east before I owned it- hence the need to be chemically stripped.

So I rounded up the best replacement sheet metal I could find along with the rusty body and took it over to one of the only two local chemical strippers I'm aware of in the LA area.

The parts came out great, but the body needs another round in the tank. I brought it home yesterday, but found more caked on rust, so back it went. Hopefully I'll get it back next Friday.

I started to spray etching primer on the parts today and will continue tomorrow..

It doesn't look too bad considering it spent time on the east coast. Nice place to start.

out of all the bolt on parts only the pass door is actually from my car ,and after stripping it I'll need to re skin the door. the rest came from other cars.

Are you going to run the hood tach?

Tuske427 04-11-2010 08:04 PM

Based on just the title of your thread, I was questioning whether or not your wife knew you went to the strippers--:_paranoid.

The first round in the tank was just a Strip tease...

Good one greg

Crazy one the only part being left is the cab. With the chem bath what are you gonna do you clean the metal I have heard of some people having a hard time getting paint to stay on?

Tuske427 04-12-2010 08:44 AM

Those were good ones!

This weekend I used an etching primer on the metal. The local paint shop said to just get one light coat on to prevent rust forming. He said it was sort of a pre primer.

to clean the metal I used a metal wash first. It was a concentrated mix so I diluted it 50/50 with water. I sprayed it on and wiped it off with a clean rag. It took off any residue left on there and left me with clean metal as seen in the pics.

Of course, I cleaned as much as I could, but couldn't get every square inch. So, we'll see. It'll still be a while before this is all done.

I'll do the body work as needed then I can re apply paint/ primer as needed. I'll also use the Eastwood rust encapsulator paint in the inner sides as I've had good luck with that in the past.
