2nd gen , ls1 , with factory front drive ?
we have a customer wanting a 2nd gen trans am with a ls1 and MUST use a factory pulley drive with AC . but from what i see we need to notch the front crossmember is that what everyone else does ?
changing the front drive is not a anwser or changing the front subframe . |
Kenny- Currently working on setting up a 2nd gen with factory sub-frame to a L99 with factory drive.. It is a challenge but looking @ how I going to make it work... Listed is what I have discovered in our research..
Factory motor & trans sits 1 inch towards pass side measured from centerline of chassis L99 drive sits alternator in lower position from LS1 L99 drive sits about 1 inch further away from block(like a truck drive) LS1 oil pan gives the best clearence on sub-frame Machining & fabricating our own Altnator & A/C brackets with motor mounts with trans support Here is where we are @ this time.. http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...n/IMG_0082.jpg |
Here is a LS2 drive system that we made our own A/C brackets & dress up pulleys..

We have a bracket that will mount the compressor high on the passenger side in front of the cylinder head. Also working on a low mount SD7 compressor adapter bracket for the factory low mount position, but that is not finished yet. But the SD7 will make the notch much smaller then a 508 compressor notch

There are a few people that have put Fbody LT1s into their second gens and kept the AC. The compressors are in basically the same location as the LSx ones. The subframe just needs to be notched and it clears. This is only if you keep the engine in the same location relative to the bellhousing as the factory engine.

I put a GTO LS1 in my 78 Camaro.
Couldn't get the AC unit to fit without notching the frame. So I ousted it. Also the GTO alternator is bigger I was told and it was hitting my pittman arm, so we had to relocate it. There's places that sell AC relocation kits. Go on Nastyz28 and research the High Tech Retrofits section. I put up most of the info on the swap info sticky. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...maroEngine.jpg |
