New Project: 1st Part--JRS Subframe
5 Attachment(s)
Starting a new project-69 Camaro 408 LS Turbo. Received my new subframe from Jake's Rod Shop about a month ago (see pics below). Currently have subframe bolted in car for turbo mockup. I'm waiting for the rest of the parts to arrive from Jake's to complete subframe install. Will update as parts arrive and progress is made.
Still not sure what to run for transmission or rear suspension-any advice? Motor on pump gas should be about 800HP. Alot of guys are pushing for automatic-any suggestions are appreciated! |
Jake makes some great pieces. Nice welds.
How about a full JRS suspension including his Torque Arm with the watts link? The watts might not be on his site yet, but you'll find it in some of his builds. Wes |
WES thanks for the reply. The subframe is a work of art and im very happy with it, I talked to Jake today he was going to send out the rest of my parts so i will post some pictures of it all assembled. I did talk to Jake about his rear suspension but I want something that will go straight as well as handle, thinking maybe a 4 link or the new ame 5 link just not sure which way to go. I have some time because I'm bringing the car to Jakes in a couple of weeks to get mini tubs and some metal work done so any thoughts are appreciated thanks Bob.

Cool project. I say 4L80E for tranny.

Thaks for the response elky, i'm leaning towards the 4l80e with paddle shifters I bought a magnum already but everybody thinks at that power level it will be to hard to drive. I did have a chance to drive a cobra that made 680 rwhp with both the stick and later the auto and do agree,it was very hard to drive between traction and shifting. I would like to hear from some high hp stick guys get their opinion thanks Bob.

With a GOOD hydraulic clutch system I would think that car would be alot of fun to drive. And Im thinking with it being a turbo that will help with the drivability. The slight turbo lag will help with starts. Give yerself some credit also. Its difficult to jump into a high HP car with a stick and drive it like you have been sitting in the seat for years. Gonna be a jerky, slippery drive at first. But after you get used to the car it becomes second nature. Yer buddies cobra? Was it normally aspirated? That will make it more touchy on the starts. Deep torque. The turbo engine will give you alot of room at the bottom to feather the clutch. It will be lacking in torque at the lower rpms for starts. Great for a manual tranny. Unless you are heavy on the go pad and get the Rs up a lil then hang on, the rear is gonna come around to see where she is going :) I vote for the manual transmission. And with the great transmissions out now and the hydraulic throwout bearing they are a dream. Not like the old days. 20 years ago the selection was limited. Heavy tranny, heavy clutch and really heavy pedal. Not much fun and alot of torched tires and clutch plates. JR |
JRouche thanks for the input ,cobra was blown 3.4 whipple ,t56 ,4.10 gears, irs.The second time I drove it the car was a stalled auto not sure on ford stuff, i think a lentec aod manual valve body trans, but it also had a straight axle and 3.50 gear ratio so he had a few changes. I already bought the t56 magnum, but just want to try to put the best package together the first time. I know the stick auto debate and suspension is more what you prefer, but trying to get input to help make my final decision, I just want to do this once, I'm hoping this car will just turn out sick, thanks once the car goes up to jakes i'll start a build thread to keep you all up to date thanks BOB.

Me personally, I don't know squat about turbos and all, but I'd lower my boost some and run the T56 Magnum. Like it was mentioned before, it's just something about a stick when your hear that engine roaring and the pause of the roar to switch manual gears....awww man, it's like music to my ears.

Will the JRS C-6 front sub and the 4L80-E trans fit in the car with no mods to the firewall or trans tunnel?
Please keep updating this thread with pics. JRS makes some sick suspension pieces. |
Thanks for the reply, I think I 'm gonna try the magnum first I already have it,for the magnum you do have to modify the tunnel. DJW Jakes already done the 4l80e he said it fits no problem. The subframe is sick , and its great most suspension parts are stock vette parts that can be bought from the dealer. Another plus is alot of brake options I'm using c6 brakes on mine. Wes you were right on Jakes torque arm ,Jake contacted me seems like it may get both jobs done and all suspension will be matched thanks for the help guys. DJW I'm real busy at work but as soon as Jake gets me the rest of pieces to assemble the sub i'll get you some good pictures of it ,and some with wheels at ride height thanks Bob
