Burning spark plug boots
Have an issue where I keep burning my spark plug boots.
Im running AFR heads with straight plugs. So pissed I did not get angle plug heads but at the time I was getting them I did not think of asking for it. I have thorley tri-y headers and there is very little clearance between the boot and the headers. so keep burning boots. I looked into shortly plugs but cannot find anything in my heat range. I could swap the headers but 1 i really like these, and 2 they cost big $$ so id rather keep them do I have any other options? |
What are you protecting the boots with?

Right now nothing.

You can purchase thermal sleeves for your spark plug boots. Here is one example from Thermo Tec. Some are metal some are braided material. A quick search on Summit Racing will bring up several brands and styles for you to choose what will work best Should be an easy problem for you to fix with the right fit! Good Luck! |
Yep, something like that or simple fiberglass boot protectors you can find at Jegs or Summit. If your headers aren't ceramic coated that would also cut down on heat.

However.... I did learn another thing from it (the straight plug head fiasco)... I found if I ran the plug wire DOWN under the headers and along the block and back up to the distributor - - it not only saved the plug wires - it looked cleaner. Did it to my BIL's blown Camaro that used to eat wires monthly. Hasn't replaced them since we did this "fix". Also -- take a look at Accels SHORTY PLUG... sometimes that will get you another 1/8th or more "away". There are also different size boots. I'm running the TAYLOR Thunderbolt 8.3 wires -- the boot is much nicer and smaller than the MSD wires I had been running. |
Sorry - saw that you already looked into the shorty plugs...
Fingers took over the brain. It happens all the time... |
What wires are you running? i have had taylors touch headers and not melt.
|
Accel 8.8 wires
Just found a set of Dse plug wire protectors I had sitting around. Rated to 500 degrees. Not the best but I'll try it |
I have seen accels melt. switch to taylor or msd
