LS1 question: oil pump, throttle body, injectors...not sure what I need
The motor is stock right now:
98 LS1 Z28 I am ordering the 230/224/111 thunder racing cam kit next week. I have: Hooker ceramic coated headers new plugs and 8mm wires 2.5" exhaust Thats is all I plan to do with the motor for now. I eventually would like to upgrade to a FAST intake from the stock. My question is: do I need to upgrade the stock throttle body, oil pump and injectors or is what I have going to be ok? I have searched ls1tech, pt, and here and I am pretty much confused due to various answers. Thanks for any help http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...i/DSC01552.jpg |
LS-x Camshaft Choice
The information provided is limited, though the stock GM Camshaft is on a 117 C/L.
Your stated cam 224/230 111 Lobe Center could reduce engine high RPM performance a great amount. Low speed performance would be terrible with that camshaft. My choice would be a 224/230 with a 118 Lobe Center. I would also change the injectors, we use Denso 470cc injectors that will idle BETTER than stockers. The OVER size pump could "push" ALL to oil out of the pan. Lance |
What are you using for an ECM? The 98 ECM is not very tuner friendly as far as I know. You may need to upgrade your harness and ECM to a later year.

I just picked up a custom LS1 harness and ECM programmed for a swap from eBay seller chevythunder_ls1. The harness is very well done, extra long, includes both fan relays and fuel pump relay, extra long O2 sensor cables, fuse block, OBD2 port and an installation DVD.The harness is well labelled, it will be great for a novice such as your self. It will also give you an ECM that any tuner can work with. This one was no. 12200411.
Watch for his auctions he has them regularly and I got this one for $430 which is a great price for all that. Don |
Thanks for posting! I will look that seller up on ebay. That is what I need, something straight forward! :D
I just looked the seller up and he is here in OKC. Very cool. Quote:

I'm not certain if you have a PCM/harness yet or not. If you do have the 98 already, it's not difficult to re-pin the 98 harness for the 99+ PCM. You can pick up one of the later PCM's for between $100 to $150.
However I wouldn't say it's a requirement that you do so. You're not going wild with this motor. A tune for cam and exhaust shouldn't be overly complicated on your 98 PCM |
if i were you and doing anything to a 98-2000 ls1 motor i would change out the oil pump to a ls6 oil pump. the stock ls1's have low oil pressure problems. the ls6 is cheap insurance to make sure the oil pressure stays where it should and flows alittle more.
