Ididit or Flaming River Steering Column???
 

I am working on a street rod and need a steering column. The owner wants a chrome/polished one with a key switch and tilt. Anyone have any experience with either of these or know of another brand?

Also any dealers on here for either of them? Looking to buy a column, drop and floor mount. PM me if you can help.

So he wants a key in the column? IDidIt Key columns have a safe key in the 4 O Clock position, the Flaming River Key looks like a stock GM key and is in the stock GM location. Pricing is very close from company to comapny, quality is equal, it is a matter of key style and location.

Yeah, he wants the key in the column. I like the looks of the FR myself and it is polished SS instead of chrome.

To the guys who say I should install a collapsible column, I found this on Ididits web site:

From this, the way the steering is set up on this car, it wouldn't collapse anyway! It is set up with 2 universal joints and an intermediate shaft.

Those are collapsible intermediate shafts, and although they are a very important feature, they often get confused with the nhtsa requirements of a collapsible steering column. Meaning, the column itself is setup to collapse independent of the intermediate shaft. It was a requirement for all cars starting in the late 60s. It’s inexcusable for the aftermarket to be selling columns that don’t meet a 60s standard. I had ididit build me a column that included the collapsing feature for $75 more than a standard column. When asked why they don’t have them, they responded with “there isn’t a demand”. I only believe there isn’t a demand because their customers aren’t informed. I wasn’t and had originally purchased and was about to install a spear. How often do you crash your car? Not often (and they actually asked me this). But with all we do to make them safe (roll cage, five points etc.), it’s silly not to make the chunk of metal you’re most likely going to hit a little softer.
