Is a manual rack & pinion a good choice?
Is a manual rack & pinion steering a good choice for a "pro-touring"/street car? It would be for an 87' G-body with handling in mind. I was specifically looking at a kit by TRZmotorsports, I have seen it on drag oriented cars but wasnt sure about a dual purpose car?

Not in my opinion. If you plan to use it as a cruiser and on the street, why use a "hard-to-turn" manual rack? For the track it would be perfect.

I have always preferred manual over powered but thats my choice , i can put up with having to tug on the wheel abit when parking but as soon as you start moving the steering lightens up . I have a unisteer setup on my 69 camaro its narrower than standard racks so it works with the camaro geometry , which means the turning circle is increased a lot . The buick rack you mentioned is also narrow so i would ask if the turning circle is increased by much from the standard turning circle . I have got used to the camaro having the turning circle of an aircraft carrier and it does not bother me , others may not be able to live with it . Its not perfect but i like it plus it gets rid of a heavy steering box and a pump and i like the feel.If you spend your time parking dont go manual , but otherwise its down to preference .

I was looking at a manual rack so I could get rid of the p/s pump and reservoir from the engine compartment to free up space for future modifications. Plus it would be significant weight loss. Like mentioned, I dont think manual steering is hard to turn at all once you were moving, just in parking spaces. I was more concerned with the steering ratio being much slower than my current power steering box. I guess I need to find out the steering ratio of the manual rack.
