Help for disc brake upgrade on second gen
I would like to upgrade the calipers to 4 or even 6 piston on my 79 Z28 but don't want to change out the stock 5 spoke rims and tires I did alot of work seting up the tires and wheels and I'm happy with the look and performance of the current set up. Front brakes are stock and changed out the rear end for a factory 10 bolt posi from a T/A so now it's disc disc.

Most caliper "upgrades" are going to reduce your effective brake torque up front, especially since you've limited yourself to a 15" wheel. If you just want a 4/6-piston caliper for looks, then knock yourself out. If you want to improve your brake perfomrance and capacity, I would suggest you look into swapping a later generation GM tall-spindle with 12" brakes. You should be able to reuse your current calipers & pads, so all you'd need is the spindles and rotors. If you wanted to shed a little weight and add a little bling, you could swap on the Wilwood D52's and call it a day.

Thanks starting to look in to options. The problem is I have spent a lot of money powder coating the stock 5 spokes and drilling the rear rims for screws
and setting up with tubes. Running sticky mickeys 10.5 foot print 29 dia I have found this setup to be a winning combo for the street and it doesn't brake the bank to replace them every year. This Z is driven and raced hard on the street. |
Do the 1LE upgrade for 12 inch rotors and use some Howe racing calipers. It will fir in a 15 inch wheel and have better cooling properties than the OEM stuff.
