rack and pinion idea?
so ive been toying around about a rack and pinion on my 69 firebird and im thinkin on getting one from a junk yard just to see how it goes with minimal cost but i dont know what size i need.
Has anyone done this? If so how did it work for you? Thanks in advance!!! |
The guy's at brewer performance resteration's has a kit that uses 97-2002 F-body rack and pinion for the 67-69 F-body's. You can google them.

What OEM GM rack and pinion works on the first gen camaros?
This would help a lot in searching for used rack and pinion from junk yards. Also, Is there seems that there is a huge price difference from flaming river and unisteer ididit (1500-1700) to generic ones for around 500 - 800. What's the difference? Obviously it's quality but is there a huge difference and is the performance different too? |
A good place to start would be to measure the distance between the lower control arm mounts. You'll have to find a rack pretty close to that width (tie rod pivots) to control bump steer. The rack will most likely (depending on engine choice) have to mount in front of the spindles on an F body., so a set of front steer spindles would be necessary.

well im runnin a 400 pontiac and i already ordered a disc brake conversion for it i havent been under the car yet to see if theres room for a rack and pinion but i dont really wanna change spindles and all seeing i just bought new ones. so maybe itll stay stock i guess ill have to find time to get into the garage and do some measuring and checking.

the unisteer conversion kit works well, the pontiac exhaust ports could cause some issues tho.
front steer on the stock sub frame is a nightmare. |
