Stock subframe modding

Hey guys quick question:

Have any of yall cut out the outboard spring pockets after installing a c/o kit?

I ask because I have the DSE coilover kit welded in, and I don't like how difficult it is to adjust if needed.

So, what I want to do, is cut the pocket out, and reinforce the frame under the control arm mount-- essentially behind the coilover. I'd also reinforce the frame in front and behind the pocket where the frame would need to taper down near the upper coilover mount. This would expose the entire coilover and hopefully not sacrifice and rigidity.

Just looking at aftermarket frames, it looks like this is what most companies did.

I know I'd be easier to buy aftermarket, but I think it'll be kinda neat and save some cash too.

Thoughts??

How to solve your problem ?

Get different dampers... and mount them correctly.

I wouldn't cut the spring pocket, as this will become your failure point... unless you plate and strap the frame where you cut everything out. But then... you'd be better off just purchasing a better subframe to begin with at that point. There is really only so much you cant do with an OE subframe.

Thanks for the input...

I would def. box in the frame with steel plate. The stock subframe is pretty thin to begin with, I don't see how this would significantly reduce any strength.

Yes, the frame would be narrower, but it would be fully boxed with thicker material...

I'm in the same boat and I don't want to speak for Chicane but think he is referring to where the upper shock mount is . ATS used to make an upper mount that looks better engineered anyway and could be welded in. OLC camaro has these. It'd be a little tricky making it work with the DSE control arm bracket but could be done I think.
Ultimately, I think most of us aren't going to be making many ride height adjustments and so long term probably isn't that big of a deal. The only trick it to use a special ball joint separater so you can undo it all pretty easily.Good luck.

ATS Still makes the Chicane Kits.
