tire width and rim size
Question for you guys, If an 18/35/275 tire is mounted on a 10 inch wide wheel, will the overall width(side wall to side wall) of the tire be smaller mounted on a 9.5 inch wheel? The tire is a toyo r888.Im told that a 275 tire has a rim mounting range of 9 to 10 inches.
My gut feel is that it will not change a full 1/2 inch and possibly bulge on the smaller wheel. If anyone has dropped rim sizes or has some info, Im running out of ideas. Other than spending rediculious amounts of money for new wheels. Thanks Rich |
Per Toyo's website, the R888 275/35/18 measures 11" wide on a 9.5" wheel. You would have .25" sidewall bulge per side. On a 10" wide wheel, you would have 0 side wall bulge.

Thanks for the info Justin, Im trying to figure out if its worth it to drop my outer hoop down to a 2.5" from 3" to make the rim a 9.5". The tire width measures 11.125 with my caliper measured across the middle of the side wall, mounted on the 10 inch. If overall width goes down to 11.0 with the 9.5 Im not gonna get much out of it :willy: :willy:
Thanks Rich |
The narrower wheel will pull the tire in a tad. It will not be a 1/2". Give me a call tomorrow at the shop and we can figure out a fix for you.

If you change just the outer barrel to 1/2" narrower, the whole tire will move toward the frame by 1/4". The section width will also decrease by about 0.2 inches so the overall section width would be about 10.9 or 0.1" less per side. So the outer bulge of the tire would move in by 0.25 + 0.1" or 0.35". The inner bulge will move inward 0.25" - 0.1" or 0.15".
