DSE Sub Connectors
 

Has anyone ever modified the DSE sub connectors making them shorter in height where they do not stick up out of the floor so high?

Would altering the subs cause any problems?

I have never installed or modified a set of DSE connectors. But I would think that if after cutting them down you boxed them back in you should be ok. It will decrease the overall strength of the connectors, but for anything less than a full on race car i THINK would work ok.
They don't come in too far, is there some other thing that will cause a problem if you don't cut them down?

If you want to make them shorter just get some rectangular tubing and make you own set. $185 is a lot of money to to pay for tubing that you are going to cut open and reweld. It is not that hard to make a set, but that being said WHY do you want then shorter?? They do not come through the floor that much, if I remember it's like 1" to 1 1/2 inches. Once the rugs are in you realy can't tell that their in there. If yiou are having a shop do it for you than show them a picture of the DSE and tell them you want the samething but shorter, if doing your self just order up a shorter rectangular tube and build away. By the way if you need demension of the DSE connectors let me know.

For me the sub connectors stick up somewhat to far and it looks like a fitted carpet would not fit the floor properly. I plan on having passengers in the back seat (my daughter come to mind) and it seems like there would be a problem with space underneath the carpet on both sides of the connector. I guess one solution would be to put some sort of foam on each side of the connector to build up the space.

Eric, my builder suggested cutting them down and boxing them back.

I agree with Rick, if you're worried about it make your own, but in my experience it's not a problem.

Yes it sure is cheaper if you go buy the DSE connectors and then modify them. I just order some steel and priced out rectangular and for the same size as DSE uses it was about $100 for enough to make a set. So now you have another $85 plus the shipping to have a set made. Over all you will spend more than just using the DSE connectors but you will have what you want which is a flat rear floor.

May just end up making a set.

I personally have no problem with the way our carpet fits in our 69 bird. It has DSE connectors and an ACC carpet kit. I can take pics in a couple days if it would help you decide anything, Matt.

for me, but my carpet is custom.

After Dynamatt, we layed down 2 layers of juke padding to help quite the car down. I have a roll bar in my car and it is tied to the sub connectors. I would not see the connectors being a problem to carpert or being uncomfortable to a rear passenger.
