Designing a 650-750 HP LS motor
I have a client who want to build and LS and 6 speed for his '69 Camaro. Here's the requirements. Make 700ish Hp and be able to drive it to work without getting beat up. I'm thinking supercharger on a LSX block configuration. What do you guys think?
Let's get specific- cam specs- Crank and rod manufacture. Displacement etc. Short of calling Mast, what are some good ideas? Thanks- Chris |
I would not do lsx block because I have read they have various issues and require a lot of machining to use.
At 700 hp I'd debate if you need a block with provisions for 6 bolt cylinder heads. I'd say forged 402-427 short block, TFS or AFR heads, a cam spec'd out by someone who has experience (like PatG on ls1tech), and a supercharger and you're there. You can also go bigger on displacement and cam, add fast 102 intake and probably get there NA but drivability may suffer. Realistically you can just throw a turbo or supercharger on any ls engine, even a stock 4.8l and probably make 700hp but for reliability and drivability sake I'd probably not do that. |
I'm also in agreement that a LSX block is neccessary. I have a friend who is running a 348 with 850 rwhp with a ECS supercharger setup.
I really like the new kenne bell supercharger. http://kennebell.net/KBWebsite/SC_pg...s/SCCAM6.2.htm They are getting 720rwhp out of a stock motor. Put some good pistons and rods in it, you will be fine. Cam, there are so many out there, I've got no clue which is best. |
get a crate ls9. with exhaust and a tune 700 is no problem and you can drive it everyday

Have a look at Wegner Automotive, they have a few N/A LS motors on their site making those numbers -- and they are great guys and always more than happy to help.

Chris,
No doubt boost will get you there, but how about a 460-500 inch N/A LS, block prepped by RHS or RED. Callies/Weisco internals, Big LS7 black label heads or WCCH. FAST intake/102mm throttlebody. Cammed approprietly should do 650 rear wheel no problem and drive nice. Look at Rupp's build, he drives his with out issues, dont know if he ever changed his throttlebody but it should be in the 650+ range. Rich |
Ls9 or even a lsa it's 556 and w a tune and or a pulley. It would be there. To me it's a no brainer. My father in law has a ls9 in his chevyii drove it over 1000 miles on power tour. What more could u expect. And it has a warranty,

Wegners do these 700 plus HP combos all day long for street cars. Call and talk to Casey. You dont need a LSx block
