70 Chevelle headliner help!!!
I did my share of research on how to install a bow style headliner seeing how this is my first... I have been doing a dry fit just to make sure I know what to do and where, before I use any glue... I am happy with 80% of it, but when I get to the sail panel area, it seems like there is too much material to make it look nice... I get all the bows in place, tug and set the front, tug and set the rear, and start setting the sides. I am pulling as straight as possible but with just enough side force to eliminate wrinkles... Also using heat gun very carefully...No matter what I do, there is just a wrinkled mess at the sail panel area... I actually added a 2''section of listing (bow sleeve) to the rear bow to make it contour better-It worked but only solved half the problem. The other half of the problem is the excess bunching at the sail panel/quarter window... Any suggestions??? Any Tricks??

Ive done a bunch of 1st gens, ive found that you really need to pull tight in the area around the sail panel. I would tug straight down at that last seam. Also is there a sailpanel headliner retainer spanning across your sailpanel, under the material you show in the second pic? There is one there on first gen camaros that helps to pull the wrinkles out of the corners, wondering if the chevelle is set up the same way Use a couple more clips at the corner of the back quarter window and tug tug tug. Becareful the listing strip at the last bow isn't to long, if its bunched up at the end of the rod its not going to strech out the wrinkles easy, they usually need a little trimming.

I had the same problem when I did the install in my 69 Firebird. I finally caved and had a professional come by. He cut the listing back and it made a huge difference. He said they usually come too long.
When I did the install in my GTO I cut the listing back and it went well, no wrinkes. Don |
