Budget suspension project
Fun stuff....
I've got a buddy w a 69 Camaro - all stock - and he's looking to upgrade his suspesnion. Budget is 4k including shocks, brakes and rear leafs (parts only if all bolt ons). Intended use is spirited street driving maybe an AutoX or two but mostly street (99.99%). Constraints are build around ATS/Speedtech tall AFX spindles. Use Kore3 c5 brakes. What would you do? I have a plan, but want to hear all opinions...:lateral: |
Are the spindles included in the 4K? Has he bought wheels yet. Reason I ask is he will have to pay attention to backspace with ATS spindle if he's shooting for bigger than a 245 up front..
Personally, I wouldnt spend over 25% of the budget on spindles. Use the stock spindle and check to see if he has the short steering arm. You say he's using Kore 3 brakes. Whats left in the budget? |
My 67 had an Quick Steer steering box from AGR and I really liked it. Just a suggestion.
:captain: |
$4K........does he plan on cheating a little? :D
I'm in the middle of installing Kore3 C5 fronts with a Wilwood 7/8 master, prop/distribution valve, new copper/nickle tubing, Hawk HP Plus pads, DBA slotted rotors on stock spindles. Lee just received my steering box today to rebuild with 12.7:1 ratio with 32 lb firm valving........approx. $2200 not including the inevitable incidentals. Rear discs with parking brake are approx. $1450 and I'm under the assumption they are likely subject to knock back issues with the stock 12 bolt set up? F&R Springs, Koni shocks, Hellwig swaybar, DSE shock plates, Guldstrand mod, new control arm bushings, ball joints, tie-rod ends, alignment? :_paranoid Very interested to hear what you have in mind. |
If your looking for an inexpensive way to make your car handle decently pick up CPP UCA's for $400 and keep the stock lowers. Use the QA-1 single adjustables with 550 lb springs. That will get you by just fine for street and auto-x. I've used the DSE and Global West sway bars and they are both similar and work well.

Thx for the responses guys. The guy already bought the spindle before he asked for help. You guys are pretty much on it. My idea - GW uppers, del-alum throughout, GW front swaybar, QA1 singles front and rear, GW L-2 cats. AGR box and hopefully a couple bucks left over.
Mike also had a good idea - sell the spindles and go DSE Speed I front and and rear. Makes sense as there's no mix/match and no reinventing the wheel. |

Spill it Ron, :P
I am interested in the whole schpeil especially since I am looking at my $4k in combined refunds. I already have a laundry list of parts squirreled away, and have flopped back and forth on various notions like a fish out of water for some time. I would very much like to hear if the ATS are coming out of the $4k as others inquired. Wouldn't tall ball joints be a much lighter hit on the budget? |

  |
Well, I may as well put my hat in the ring as well:)
http://www.ridetech.com/store/1967-1...er-system.html If you are truly going to chase some track day or autocross stuff you might want to upgrade to the SA Series coilovers that are rebound adjustable for an extra $300. |
