The supercharged 5.8-liter powerplant in the new 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been officially certified as the most powerful series production V-8 in the world, Ford says.

The massive engine was just Society of Automotive Engineers certified as producing peak output of 662 horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. of torque. Ford has said it expects the car to have a top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour. The GT500, made by Ford in Flat Rock, Mich., is the most powerful version of the Ford Mustang.

Yet even with an amazing 112 horsepower more than the 2012 model it replaces, the souped-up Mustang will get 1 mile per gallon more on both the city and the highway. Its EPA-estimated gas mileage is 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, for 18 mpg combined. Ford points out that it won't have to pay the gas guzzler tax even though the car's horsepower output is matched only a handful of exotics costing upwards of $100,000. Price of the new GT500 is yet to be disclosed.

Ford, in fact, couldn't help but throw in a jab: GT-500 will get 5 mpg more highway gas mileage than the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which has 82 fewer horses. In a continuing sore point for Ford, Camaro handily outsells Mustang.

Ford says the GT500's power is fairly consistent across the curve.
How does it get there? Ford points to a combination of the new TVS 2.3-liter supercharger, twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder.

"Our goal is to create outstanding all-around performance cars, not just stoplight-to-stoplight sprinters," said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. "We've backed up this amazing powerplant with a more refined chassis tuning that helps keep the rubber on the pavement without punishing the driver's spine and six-pot Brembo brakes that dissipate speed with ease stop after stop."

i'll take the camaro any day of the week

I can certainly appreciate both the ZL1 and the GT500 - -neither are even remotely in my price range so......

From a styling perspective the Mustang wins hands down in my book. That being said, the Camaro has grown on me. The Camaro gets points in my book for still employing a push-rod V8, but you can't argue with the output of the Mod motors these days.

It's a good thing for our hobby that the Camaro vs. Mustang pissing match continues.............Keep fueling that fire!!!!!

Insane amount of power in a modern Mustang. I bet the ZL1 spanks it everywhere but in a straight line and maybe there.

I had one of these new Shelby's on order through Galpin Ford and I canceled it to buy a Mach 1 Pro Touring for many reasons.

I bought a 2012 ZL1 and for the money the car didn't do crap for me, cheap interior, wheel hop, terrible stereo and no real Nav. My ZL1 actually blew up its driveshaft in under 800 miles, same POS crap the 5th Gen has had since 2009. I quickly traded for a 2012 CTS-V and I think the V is one if not the best GM built car today. My Camaro had an interior worse than a 40 year old american car, it was all thermoformed ABS plastic.

The Shelby will be over 65k + tax, and if you decide to sell it plan to loose 20k right off the bat in the first year or so. I wasn't willing to do that because in the end its just another high production car with no rarity. Don't get me wrong its freaking amazing looking and the performance is the pinnacle of the modern muscle car world hands down but i honestly love vintage versus modern any day so in my case i have a little of both. If I didnt have the CTS-V maybe the Shelby would be a neat daily driver.

point here is for anyone considering selling your pro touring for a new modern muscle car, dont do it unless you can have both and dont care about loosing your shirt. If i hit a lotto or something i will buy a Shelby to use as a donor to build the sickest pro touring 69-70.:)

I agree with your assessment of the ZL1. Additionally, the new GT500 WILL spank the ZL1's ass.

They should be fun cars. I think the handling might surprise a few people, especially if it is noticeably better than the '11-12 models, which do surprisingly well, in my opinion.

If they're using the same standard by which they rated last year's cars the '13s will likely be putting down around 580 on a chassis dyno.

Your Camaro is purdy, a 67 or 68 is real purdy, that new ZL1 is .........I guess just saying NOT is the polite description.
