Paint Chip questions
 

I needed to trim my fender lips to get a little extra clearance for the new wheel/tire combo. When I removed my wheel well trim I found some of the lip edges had bubbled, probably from all the rubbing on the old tires. While grinding down the lip a couple pieces broke off exposing bare metal. I think there is 2, both pretty small. No rust or anything on the exposed metal.



I stopped by a body shop today and asked some questions and they recommended doing the following

-- tape everything off

-- Spray U-POL Grey self etching primer onto the bare metal

-- brush on base coat ( I have a small can the PO gave me)

-- prime exposed bare metal edges from grinding, and then cover with seam sealer to prevent any rust, moisture etc.

I just wanted to throw this out there and see if that sounds correct

Not sure where the problem area is, but is sounds like on the actual edge where inner wheelwell is welded with outer quarter panel skin. If that is the area, mask off against overspray, spray some etching primer ,if there should be seam sealer, apply seam sealer,then apply paint followed by clearcoat. I like Sherwin Willams GBP988 etching primer in aerosol can, been using it for 6-8 years ,seems to work much better than U-pol I used before.

Both chips are right at the edge of the lip on the tire side so it's the actual body color. I had to trim the lip for fitment so that edge is bare metal at the moment. I'm pretty nervous about messing with the paint on this car at all so I just wanted to see if what that body shop told me was the right way to go.

because the chips are so small, I had planned to spray some of the self etching primer in a cup and brush it on because I don't want to risk ruining the surrounding paint. The guys at that shop had mentioned priming and putting seam sealer on the exposed edge of the lip that I just ground...does that sound right?

Using a touch up brush to dab some primer or paint is fine as well,but seam sealer needs to go on after primer and before paint.
